Sorry JHEM, but that reads exactly like the kind of over-hyped blahblah crap to me that makes me very suspicious.
With all their hype about >total paradigm shift<, I just wonder:
Since this is supposed to be the 2nd generation of that weapon, why haven't they already won all their wars in Afghanistan, Columbia and Iraq with the 1st generation of that system???
My advise when it comes to (any kind of ) guns: Less testosterone, more common sense.
Finally, I think we already have (more than enough) ways to kill people.
I hardly see the point in getting that excited about being even more "efficient" in that department.

Two problems I see:
1.) Spin up time
2.) Difficulty in turning the device along it's longitudinal axis due to extremely strong centripetal force
Also, god knows how dangerous that thing could be if its even slightly out of sync - you could be looking at a gun that shoots backwards!

Is anybody even slightly bothered by the fact that those are killing machines designed to kill as many people in as short a timeframe as possible?
They are not designed to shot at birds or alligators, but people and very soon might be rolling down your neighborhood alley.
If there is any truth to the old saying “power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”, then this accumulation of more and more killing “efficiency” in the hand of a select few does not cause me to break out in laughter and thrill seeking excitement.

Good Lord, this is tounge-in-cheek fun!
Notice we are off topic.
So what if they are meant for killing, your enemy is less likely to attack you if they know you have better weapons than them!
Again, this is fun stuff, I don't think James or myself will get one of these any time soon, and to go one step further, full auto firearms have been STRICTLY controlled by the BATF since the late 30s and they are virtually NEVER used in crime. Some things exist that you and I, mere mortals, will never get!

And every single month military grade weapons are being stolen and/or used in crimes in this country.
People here in the US have already used everything from Tanks to 50 caliber machine guns to kill fellow citizens.
But I'm not even talking about that (even so the NRA will surely claim that unfettered access to a DREAD is a constitutionally guaranteed human right).
No, just imagine what would have happened if back in the 50's and 60's these weapons would have already existed.
If Alabama's Governor George Wallace would not have needed the support of thousands of state troopers and national guardsmen to crack down on the freedom marchers, but one lonesome redneck with a DREAD could have taken care of all civil liberty activists from Alabama to Selma.
It wouldn't even have made much noise, no rattling the neighbors.
Just a lot of "pop, pop. pop's" and the south would have risen up in glory again!
No need to mobilize dozens of divisions or to declare a state of emergency.
Just one man and his DREAD and you can give a whole new meaning to the term WMD!
Imagine if the government forces in RWANDA or Phol Pot's Khmer Rouge would have had access to such weapons (and don't say that this "Jinn out of the bottle" will stay hidden any longer).
Imagine the Watts riots and some scared LAPD commissioner sending in the Metal Hammer troops.
Talk about a Terminator scenario!

Well Rick, on our planet we lived under the threat of total nuclear annihilation for almost 50 years, so a better gun is hardly cause for an anxiety attack.Batuta wrote:If there is any truth to the old saying “power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”, then this accumulation of more and more killing “efficiency” in the hand of a select few does not cause me to break out in laughter and thrill seeking excitement.
We now live under the threat of nuclear weapons in the hands of rogue nations, particularly N. Korea, which should have been nuked into a parking lot 30 years ago along with its "Dear Leader" IMHO.
As has been proven throughout history, a lack of the latest weaponry will not prevent a government from executing whatever portion of its citizenry has fallen out of favor. After all, Stalin's favored method was to simply stop feeding them. Next to him. all other tyrants are pikers.

I am not going to get into a spitting contest here, but I must refute these comments. Link to an article that is factual and shows a "military grade" weapon that was stolen and was used to kill some people here in the USA. For that matter, what is a "military grade" weapon? Is that the same as the so-called "assault weapon"? In case you are wondering, any that is used in an assault is an assault weapon, so a spoon could be limited by the BATF as an assault weapon if they want! Think about it.Yes this is the "Off-Topic" forum, but those weapons are for real.

Second, I cannot recall of a .50 cal 'ma deuce' being used to kill people of late. Please also link to a factual story of such. The few who can afford to own the venerable .50 are surely not using them to shoot people.
Finally, your take on the NRA is so off the mark as to indicate your knowledge of this topic, is extremely biased by the criminal liberal media. Please do a little real research prior to commenting further on such things.
No further comments from me will be forthcoming, so whatever rebuttal you have, make sure it is FACT.

Yet the DREAD is exactly being advertised as a low profile mass murderer, just like that pocket size terminator on wheels from Metal Hammer.

2. According to FBI data, between 1998 and 2001, one in five law enforcement officers slain in the line of duty was killed with an assault weapon.
The gun store just around the corner in my home town offers those for less than $500.-- and if you don't plan to use them against people, then next thing you'll be telling me is that they are for deer hunting right?
And $500.-- is cheap for a weapon that allows you to kill someone even when he is hidding behind a steel plated concrete wall and hold an entire police department at bay.
As far as I'm concerned the only difference between the NRA and the KKK is their short supply of white sheets.
PS: There is no "right to bear arms" for the individual in the constitution and I dare anyone to prove otherwise.
Guns are not toys and they are not part of basic humans rights.
They are used to take away the most basic of human rights, the right to life.
Yes and we almost got annihilated over that. And those "rogue" nations wouldn't be so rogue anymore if people would stop trying to develop ever more effective ways of killing each other.on our planet we lived under the threat of total nuclear annihilation for almost 50 years,

The only thing >criminal< here is the fascist attitude of an organization who openly advertised the assisination of federal employees (NRA) and whose chairman (Charlton Heston) explained on camera the high gun related crime rate in the US with the large # of non-white inhabitants in this country who make life so miserable for "the good old white men who founded it".tFinally, your take on the NRA is so off the mark as to indicate your knowledge of this topic, is extremely biased by the criminal liberal media. I have to wonder if the Dread, or something similar, could be mounted in a Blackbird and taken aloft to launch micro-satellites into LEO?
Could also probably be done from a converted 747 flying at FL500 just as easily.
Anyone recall the Delta V for LEO?

James

A while back Los Alamos was working on an electromagnetic railgun that they claimed would be able to fire a bowling ball into LEO. The problem with railguns though is you can only fire them once, and they need the electrical equivalent of a small city (but just for a few microseconds).

Okay, I have one last comment. $500 for a REAL FULL AUTO .50 cal is a pipe dream and that Batuta would suggest, this is amaizing, especially since he is a self-proclaimed non gun person, but he knows the around the corner gun shop inventory! Ha ha ha ha ha haThat is bona fide nonsense.

That said, Batua, feel free to leave whenever you want, but if something as simple as a post about new TECHNOLOGY (regardless of what it's used for) has infuriated you to the point of being immature, maybe you shouldn't be around here in the first place.
