Accidental Warranty

#1 Post by edelrc » Sat Jun 19, 2004 10:01 am

If you're spending $3000+ in a laptop, it would be nice to have an Accidental type of warranty to it.
Does IBM offer anything like that? I know you can extend your warranty's time frame and speed of service... but can you also increase coverage???

(That is the only think I regret from IBM. Dell and Toshiba offer this coverage easily available and it is sort of affordable too!)

I know IBm has accidental coverage that you can buy for extra. I could not find the info on IBM.com If I find it I'll post it up ...

Bill, for those of us just receiving our Thinkpads via the 3VU buy, is there any way to get this protection service?

One more question - is the Accidental Damage Warranty international? i.e. can I get it serviced/replaced outside the US?

I would also be interested to know if this could be organised when purchasing through Bill.

Cheers,
Rob.

That little bit at the bottom "only valid at time of purchase" bothers me a bit - I'm buying thru Bill and I was rather hoping to organise insurance when I receive the unit - I admit I hadn't really thought of it up until now...I wonder if this just means it only applies to NEW units? Anyone got any clues here please?

Thinkpad Protection

#13 Post by Jake2468usa » Mon Jun 21, 2004 12:15 am

Thinkpad protection can only be bought (upgraded) at the same time the thinkpad is purchased. The idea is to have it before an issue arises, else everyone would buy it when they drop their thinkpad.

Believe you me, IBM does not make any money on thinkpad protection or on site service.

It is well worth the extra money upfront.

Also keep in mind, a on site upgrade can be purchased at any time during the warranty period, BUT .. if you have 2 years left on your warranty, your in a quandry, you can purchase a 1 year on site upgrade, and not have on site the second year, or purchase a three and "waste" the year the didn't have it covered.

I just called IBM and they told me that this Protection Service can only be purchased at the time of the sale. However, I wouln't make it conclusive. This people are only trainned on first time sales.

A few days ago, someone post regarding adding the Protection Service after he bought the thinkpad. The only thing is that he had to send the Thinkpad for verification...

The good news, is that it looks like its coverage it is interantional. I will call again to verify it against another IBM agent's opinion.

I got separate "all perils" coverage with no deductible from my insurance company (State Farm) for $30 per year (a couple of months after I had purchased the computer). Check it out.

safeware.com allows you to buy it later if you want. Thier price is not much different than IBM's, but covers BOTH theft and damage.

Thanks for the info... however I have to go with IBM because... well... State Farm and safeware.com are not in the 'Old Europe'.

Besides theft it is not what I worry about there...

Well, "all perils" includes theft, dropping, submersion, fire, lightning, etc, etc. I'm sure the terminology is different in Europe but an independent insurance company policy might work for you.

For those who are interested... The IBM Protection Plan it is only for the US (I don't know if Canada too), but defenitly not Europe or others.
(But, of course, you may want to come to the US to have that broken screen replace than to pay $800... won't you?)

IBM does offer the bumps and bruises warranty in Canada as well. I got it with the X31 for an extra $140 for 3yrs if I recall.
I am Canadian

I ordered a T42-DUU through Office Depot which I should be getting tomorrow. I called IBM a couple of days ago and asked about the accidental insurance and was told that it was only available when purchasing from them. Not sure if it was a line of BS, but that is what the person I spoke to said. This kind of gets my dander up because I specifically asked the sales person at office Depot if there was this type of accidental insurance that I could get and he said there was nothing through office depot, but he was not aware of what IBM had to offer in that regard. If I had known there were disadvantages to not buying my unit directly through IBM, I would have done it differently. Something doesn't seem right with that picture.

Yes, IBM states clearly in many places that IBM protection plan can be only adquire at the time of purchase so if you got out of Office Depot with the laptop... you're out of good luck. WHat I don't know is if Office Depot has authorization from IBM to sell also their Protection Plan... I think that Bill Morrow has it!

Some notes:
-First, I am really surprise that Office Depot has ThinkPads... did they had them on stock? Office Depot in Florida right?
-Second, does Office Depot has a restocking fee for IBM laptops? I am sure you could had got it better in prize too.
-Third, I read once here from someone here that he achieved to get a IBM Protection Plan added after purchasing, but that had to send the laptop for inspection to the IBM depot... never knew more from that case!

yes, it was Office Depot in Florida. They have them on display, but not in stock. They take 3 to 5 business days to your door step. According to their policy, special order items like the ThinkPads can't be returned. They also sell them on line much like CDW but they have the same policy as far as I know. I would have purchased the insurance at the time of purchase, but I was told they didn't offer it. Live and learn I guess. I should have really combed through these forums a lot more before buying. Too late now. i do have State Farm for insurance on our cars, so maybe I can get something through them.
