Massive Attack - Dissolved Girl.

I wasn't listening to music when I sat down, but after checking out Portishead on Youtube, as suggested by George, I noticed the link to Massive Attack's Mezzanine album. Back in the days it took me a while before I fully appreciated this genre, but once I did, this became my Massive Attack favorite album.

Re: What music are you listening to right now?
A couple of days ago in the car I heard a song I recognized, but I couldn't remember the artist or name of the song. I googled part of the lyrics and found it. Ammie Mann - Voices Carry (circa 1985).
Enjoyed watching the artist perform it live on YouTube.

apologies for posting twice so quickly, but Diana Krall was somehow unknown to me and I am in love.
in the spirit I feel from her voice, I suggest the following -
coucou, Django version (man, that clarinet!!) Cadill'-a-dilla-dilla!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WqmkSMpqvg
coucou, Ms. McKeown live and having fun
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPW0bwcK58w
obvious choice: Ms. Jones
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBseZ6y7hDQ
for good measure, what happens when evilpop shifts madly towards blues: Ms. Dement + Ms. Abbott role reversal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5yyS5zufws
and because 4 is an unlucky number, and even though this is a truly sad song underneath, the best/unknown: Ms. Marya
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGcAp3GBk6k
I will return later, with tales of a modern day Django.

Cool that she is brought up. Tracey Thorn has done a lot of good stuff, both with Everything But the Girl and other bands. Including the one with Massive Attack, as linked above. I really enjoyed Everything But the Girl's Missing, from back in the days. And still do.tarvoke wrote:think I am at the complete opposite end of the Massive Attack spectrum, than George and NorwayPad:

Interesting to hear her do a Springsteen cover, btw. But Bruce's live version of Tougher Than the Rest is my all-time Bruce favorite, though, so not sure if anyone else can do this better in my ears. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_91hNV6vuBY

I told myself I would take a week timeout, but, promise broken:
CORCOVADO
(don't tempt me, I will provide 17 million other amazing artists singing corcovado, traditional or otherwise...)
((oh. wow. somehow youtube automagically moved on from Ms. Owens to ?Lisa Ono? - what a ridiculously gorgeous voice))
darn your scaly hide, NorwayPad. ha.
oh man, the several-million different mixes of Missing...!? - by both EBTG and Massive Attack, are all of them literally iconic.
as the Boss is, for very apparent reasons..., well, he's The Boss. there is no other. but - that particular song, to me, is more interesting than just the usual cover. Springsteen makes it as his usual kind of negative-anthem and it's beautiful. (listening to the live version right now!) - it's simply incomparable.
the weird/great thing about the EBTG Acoustic album is that they aren't quite exactly covering songs but almost reclaiming them into Magnetic Fields sort of territory, similarly their treatment of Waits - I don't have proper words to explain it. like, my feeling/perception is that the Springsteen song isn't just a nice cover, but somehow twisted into an entirely different sort of false-anthem.
Adapt or Die "10 years of remixes" sort of addresses this as well. (although at a different level? they are sort of covering/abstracting themselves...)

Re: What music are you listening to right now?
I do have to admit to bias - the original Springsteen song, only he can do it properly. ever.
but there are some fairly weird chords and the cadence gets beyond-awkward for mere mortals in some places. the EBTG acoustic version is simplified for primates. which is another reason I like it. my fingers can understand the notes and my voice register only goes from low-Merritt up to Thorn
someone needs to ban me from this thread soon lol.

GomJabbar, ha, one of those Gilberto carried on with YT's new auto-whatever-feature and ended up into Fly Me to the Moon, close to my heart favorite of all time. on a HD somewhere in the depths of darkness, is precisely 34 remixes of Fly Me to the Moon from the old EVA OST. I'm not going to make the effort to dig it up, but the thought of it existing makes me so happy and I can remember every last one of those mixes.GomJabbar wrote:Ahh, Brasilian music - one of my favorite genres!

Re: What music are you listening to right now?
Now for something a bit different. There was an album I first heard back ~1971 by a group called Caravan, and the album's name was "In the land of Grey and Pink". I quite enjoyed the album at the time, and even had a chance to see Caravan in person in 1974 at a nightclub concert at Ebbet's Field in Denver, Colorado (yeah, I'm that old!).
I believe I still have that LP, but don't currently have a working phonograph to play it on. At any rate I have not listened to Caravan in some years. Something brought them back to mind a couple of days ago, and I found the album on YouTube.
One reviewer said the music on this album is: "a blend of rock, pop, folk, jazz, and fantasy." and "Re-listening to this album is a feast. The musicianship, originality, quality of production--all contribute to a stunning album."
The entire album: "In the Land of Grey and Pink"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTu8mjaeV5s
One song I particularly like: "Winter Wine"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2ZrJdmnHIw
The most acclaimed: "Nine Feet Underground"

And not to forget: "Golf Girl"

Glad to see someone here has listened to Caravan before. I confess to being ignorant of the "Canterbury scene" itself before looking into it the last couple of days. I am going to have to check out some of the other bands from the Canterbury scene when I get to a location where I have the bandwidth to watch YouTube. I am currently at work using the internet via sat phone at sea.ajkula66 wrote:Not too many people are aware of Caravan, regardless of their age... ...Canterbury scene at its sunset, but what a great sunset that one was...

Nice video to the Deadmaus song. The scenery is exactly the same as if I go for a drive around here at the moment. The glimpse of some of the traffic signs indicates it might be Sweden, but can't say for sure.

Re: What music are you listening to right now?
Just been listening to some old stuff from the 1960s including Spencer Davis Group with Stevie Winwood as lead vocalist. He does a fantastic version of "Georgia on my Mind".
How anyone so young at that time could have so much soul in his voice is amazing. Well worth looking for on Youtube.
Also listened to ELO's "Ticket to the Moon", Joni Mitchell's "Blue", and Joan Armatrading's "The Weakness in Me" ... amazing.
Then Elgar's "Enigma Variations" (because I love classical music too), and Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird".
However to end it all, and before going to bed, I listened to Dusty Springfield's "If you go away" and Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven".
I'll sleep well now!

Re: What music are you listening to right now?
Ever since first visiting Russia in 1999 and then finally moving there in 2003 (from the UK) I started listening to Zemfira, a Russian singer.
So now virtually all I listen to is popular Russian Music, Zemfira, Meladze, Viagra, Yulia Savicheva, Glukoza, Philipp Kirkorov and stuff.
Years since I even heard Western Music...
And.. listening to Romashki by Zemfira now.
