haha

i decided (90% sure at least) on the mac because it makes sense.

the iMac is bar-none the best photoshop/ media editing system under 2 grand...not even going to mention the awesome 20" display.

I need windows for access + some other business apps. If I have my windows needs covered with the x41, why not go for the best solution that my other tasks require?

It's pretty even these days. If you build your own system you can get better performance for <$1000 and add whatever monitor you like. Or you can buy a prebuilt that will be fairly competitive.

Of course I dislike integrated computers generally as well. You have less expandability, and of course more to lose when something breaks. Laptops have to be integrated, desktops IMO do not.

But by all means buy an iMac if you like them or like the OS, but trust me it's far from the best media machine under $2k.

Hey, if you can recommend a pre-built windows system ( I don't feel like building a system I just want one place to call if something breaks  ) under 2k then I would love to pick it up instead of the mac.

Well it really doesn't matter a whole lot to be honest. Just account for the difference in cost of not having a monitor on desktop system and look for a 3 or 3.2 Ghz plus P4 or a 3200 or faster rated Athlon 64 and you'll have a great machine.

I was just saying you don't have to get the Mac since there's no advantage to it for media work (no disadvantage either). It just seemed like you were falling in to that old mac=media machine trap.

The apps used on Macs and Windows machines are usually the same, with no advantage on either platform.

Where the Mac does have a very real advantage is the total lack of viruses, adware and spyware, which on Windows having risen from a minor annoyance 5-years-ago to a major headache today.

I agree, this is a clear difference between the two other than external appearances. But if you're going to get a Thinkpad chances are you know how to take care of your computer. I avoid using outlook and IE, and I spend maybe a max of 5 minutes every few weeks on each of my computers making sure they're healthy. It's a minimal amount of work, but if you don't want to do any of that at all OSX is inviting.

You can and most likely will get more hardware for your money going the PC route, so if you're doing a lot of multimedia/image editing stuff and you're not using mac specific software that's something to think about too.

You constantly have to weigh the +s and -s of each system.

I use a hardware firewall (except when on the road), a software firewall and all of the adware, spyware and antivirus software described above, and I still get hit. I use Firefox instead of IE, Pegasus instead of Outlook, and know enough to not open strange attachments, yet still Windows will eventually implode.

I do like my T42p hardware better than my PowerBook, but there is no question of which one has the superior OS, and its not a sllight edge, but a drastic one.

wow.... i lost this part of my other thread

Hmmm

but really, is there a PC builder out there that can build a system for 1500~ (subtracting monitor cost)...heck $1600 (i dont really need a second monitor...and u gotta figure in the educational discount for macs) that will outperform a 2ghz imac?

I would love to hear more oppinions on this, no platform wars please.... and remember that this is strictly a media machine (photo (cs2), audio (pleasure not pro), video (minor stuff) ...in that order)

go! 8)

*sigh* no, not really

If you want to use Final Cut, get the Mac. Otherwise there are some options for PC vendors that will give you a good educational discount. Everything you need to know has already been said, now you just need to window shop. The G5 is a great processor, although not the gift-from-God Apple made it out to be. It's a very good photoshop performer but so are the Pentium and AMD64 chips. You really won't go wrong with any of them.
