A good router that will do both a and G?

#1 Post by alpuzz » Mon Aug 01, 2005 10:33 am

I currently have a Linksys WRT54GS. The router works well enough but the area is getting crowded with G networks. Another thing I don't like about this router is that with the standard firmware, there is apparently no provision for static DHCP. I want to run a linux box on a fixed ip so I can forward some of its ports, but if there is any way to do this with the WRT54GS, I'm not finding it.

Therefore, I'm wanting a new router that will resolved both of these issues. So far, I'm considering the Netgear WGU624, as well as the Linksys WRT55AG. I don't know much about either of these units, but my concern with the Linksys is that it may also lack the static DHCP feature.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Before you buy another router, look at that thread. I have the same model, and there are about 16 (dependin on the day) access points within reach.....

Thanks for this.

i've played with some of the other firmware releases and it seems that the only one that supports static DHCP is Sveasoft's Talisman. However, the problem with Talisman is that for some reason, it breaks my CD3O streaming media player. The Sveasoft people never came up with a fix. If you're interested, look here:

So, unless there is a firmware other than Sveasoft that supports static DHCP, I think I'm out of luck with this router.
