Would you buy Windows Mobile ultraportable Thinkpad?
Would you buy Windows Mobile ultraportable Thinkpad?
I'm just contemplating. So would you purchase this hypothetical device? Here are the features:
- Windows Mobile 5.0
- Instant-On
- 800x600 pixels screen
- Widescreen, but relatively small size screen. About 6" or so (Don't know of this agrees with the number of pixels mentioned)
- 4GB HD
- Decent ROM & RAM capacities (Can't go too technical due to lack of knowledge)
- Bluetooth
- WiFi
- Infrared
- GPRS/EDGE
- PCMCIA slot
- Compact Flash slot
- SD/Multimedia card slot.
- Weight: 1.5lbs
- List Price: $800
- Street Price in the second/third month: $670
EDIT: I should add that it's off course a touch-screen, with swivel-convertible formfactor. A Thinkpad feel/looks and Trackpoint. Good display in sunlight.
That's it. Remember that Windows Mobile is getting more and more sophisticated. Now, you can pretty much do everything that you NEED on a Windows Mobile device. Plus you have the Instant-On, Lightweight, and Longer battery life.
So what do you people think? Is this something to consider?

Something like this, except made by IBM?
Psion NetBook Pro
The descendant of the Psion PDAs (specifically, the NetBook), but upgraded memory, and running WinCE instead of EPOC.

1. OK
2. They should all support Standby - which is Instant On
3. How are you going to find a full-sized keyboard with a 800x600 display?
4. Probably
I already have a HP200LX Palmtop that I use. If or when it eventually dies, I will probably get some sort of PDA replacement. I would not be looking for a PDA with all the features you mention. I would want something basic. My wife has a Palm Tungsten T3 that is quite nice. It has all the features I would ever want (except maybe a miniature keyboard).
My 3-3/8" X 6-1/4" X 1" HP200LX has a complete QWERTY keyboard and Numeric Keypad. It also has a PCMCIA type II card slot plus Serial and Infrared communication capabilities. It also runs MS-DOS.

Okay, maybe I should explain where I'm coming from. I LOVE Handheld PCs, the likes of the Netbook Pro and Jornada 720. My only major problem with them is the software: they are no longer supported by developers or Microsoft. Besides that they use outdated technology. Bad displays and no builtin wireless, except infrared.
I think the device that I described is very reasonable. The Netbook Pro has a 800x600 display and a full-keyboard. But it uses outdated OS that is no longer supported by anyone. And it's too expensive anyway. Psion didn't know how to market it and price it.
So suppose the device I described became available within the next 4 months. Would you buy it or plan to buy it?
EDIT: I think I see what you mean GomJabber. As for me, sometimes I feel that my T40 is too heavy for me. I'm only 140lbs! That's why I want something cheap, lightweight and practical that does everything I need plus more. An updated Handheld PC.

Actually, to clarify, if I had tons of money, I'd have TWO systems.
This thing (the PC220?), and a T43.
However, the X32/33 would be a GREAT compromise between the two. The number crunching power and expandability of a T42, but smaller. And, a WHOLE lot more power than this thing.

All here have full keyboards, but full-sized keyboards?
The keyboard on my 14" T42 is 11-1/4" wide X 5" deep.
The overall dimensions of the Network Pro are 9.25" X 7.24" X 1.38"
The overall dimensions of the Fujitsu P1500D are 9.3" X 6.57" X 1.36"
The overall dimensions of the Toshiba U105 are 8.27" X 6.50" X 1.17"
The overall dimensions of the OQO 01+ are 4.9" X 3.4" X .9"
Something here just doesn't add up.

You mean too bad they didn't use AccuPoint, which is their own TrackPoint knockoff, right?
FWIW, the old Librettos had a HUGE AccuPoint as their pointing device, and it was on the BACK of the screen.

Yeah, except the accupoint on the U is in between the two mouse buttons. Doesn't seem it would be fun to use.bhtooefr wrote:You mean too bad they didn't use AccuPoint, which is their own TrackPoint knockoff, right?

cross between the pc110 and workpad
It would be neat if it was a cross between the pc110 and the workpad; have a screen that can be turned and placed over the screen like it was a pda or used like a normal notebook screen where one can enter via the keyboard.
