As stated above, the T42p (14", thank you) is simply perfect. Everything about it is just right, from the 1" thickness to the 5lb weight. It is seriously portable, seriously powerful, and with the right battery choices (I use the ultrabay slim and 9 cell for travel = 9hrs) can get you through your workday without even thinking about an AC outlet.
You can't do any better, well, except for the PowerBook with its virus-free OSX.

Nah, Linux is a geek OS for geek users. Its not for people who have no interest in writing code and hunting down drivers and trying to compile them.
Oh, and of course if you use linux you can throw compatibility with the rest of the world out the window. Want the latest version of MS Office? Sorry, Wine only supports up to Office 2000. Want to play modern games? Sorry, almost none out there for Linux (even fewer than for Mac).
Yeah, I've heard the standard arguments about OpenOffice and the like, but for people who don't want to reformat every document they get from their word-using buddies, or force their friends/family/clients to reformat the documents you send to them, there is no substitute for REAL MS Office.
Sorry, Linux just isn't there yet for mainstream use.

Sorry, you may not like MS office, but as a business user and being compatable with 99% of my other customers, WordPerfect is not an option.GomJabbar wrote:Sure there is. WordPerfect Office. Don't feel sorry for us, MS Word is how business is done, like it or not.
Linux?, Well that not even worth talking about.

Yes, I am aware of that. And I imagine if you use any software for a long enough period of time, you come to understand it's quirks and how to make it work for you. I just had to put my 2-cents in when I read the post: "there is no substitute for REAL MS Office".Greg Gebhardt wrote:Sorry, you may not like MS office, but as a business user and being compatable with 99% of my other customers, WordPerfect is not an option.

Well, I use both WordPerfect 12 and MS Word 2003 which I have because I got Office 2003 mainly for Excel and Outllook. Imo, if you really want precise control over the formatting, WordPerfect just can't be beat. But admittedly, I am not as expert with MS Word as I am with WP. I find Word adequate for creating simple documents like letters, but when I need to create legal briefs and such, WP is far superior.Greg Gebhardt wrote: Sorry, you may not like MS office, but as a business user and being compatable with 99% of my other customers, WordPerfect is not an option.

However, getting back to the point, WP12 now does a very good job (better than previous versions) of converting documents created in WP with complex formatting to the MS Word .doc format while preserving all the formatting. So you CAN now share documents created in WP with Word users quite easily. I do it fairly frequently and always check to see how the converted documents look when opened in Word 2003 and they have so far always been fine. (Not sure if it works as well going the other way, however.)
I am just glad that WP is still being developed and supported, even though it has pretty marginal market share compared to MS Office, because I love the way I can make it do what I want much more easily than I can with MSWord. (Pretty happy with Outlook though.)

They may be great applications, but they are NOT MS Office. When I receive a document with complex formatting from MS Word, I REFUSE to spend my time reformatting, and I cannot expect others to do the same when I send something to them.
Linux is still a geek's toy, and will be until the rest of the world moves away from Word or MS offers Office for Linux, neither of whciih are likely to happen anytime soon.

Nowdays it helps in business to have both MSWord and WordPerfect, these are the two biggies, you can download tools from MS to open most all of the documents to a readable and printable format, although you can't edit, i.e, WP to Word, open an excel document even though you don't have the program.
A lot of customers ask me why they can't interchange from their home computer running WordPerfect to MSword, I explain to them about the conversion programs and usually say "its a microsoft thing".

So far my PowerBook has been more reliable than my ThinkPad, though that is more a Hitachi issue (both use TravelStar drives) as my ThinkPad needed a replacement HD.emorphien wrote:Right. :roll:asiafish wrote:You can't do any better, well, except for the PowerBook with its virus-free OSX.
But what if I want a fast and durable machine?
The T42p is probably tougher than my PowerBook, but I take good care of my gear and so far both are still absolutely immaculate.
While the T42p hardware is arguably more durable (not up to the level of the older 600 series or T2x), my data, which is worth far more than both laptops combined, is much better protected on the PowerBook. In addition to not having to worry about malware, I also don't have to worry about data corruption during an OS crash, because there simply are none.
If OSX could run on the T42p I would call it the perfect notebook, but it can't, making the PowerBook a very serious alternative.
My PowerBook is a 1.5GHz 12", it runs only a little bit slower than my 1.8GHz T42p in most applicaitons (not enough to notice except for rendering video), and like my ThinkPad running Windows, I use genuine MS Word for my business documents (legal).
