Being relatively new to the forum, I haven't participated in this thread yet...

Unfortunately in my house, I don't have a dedicated work area, so my desktops have taken a back seat. Basically I keep them for data recovery and data storage.

Not counting the desktops and boneyard, I'm still over five, though:

Personally owned:

1) T60 from my sig. This is my workhorse, my day-to-day personal productivity machine. It's a 4:3 with a T7200, 4GB RAM (3GB usable), and a 500GB HDD. It's running Ubuntu 12.04 with the Cinnamon interface (hate the Unity interface).

2) T61. This machine is a widescreen with a T7300, 4GB RAM, and a 320GB HDD. It's running Windows Server 2008R2 Standard with Hyper-V, hosting several of my lab VMs (DC/DNS/DHCP/WDS, member server, XP, 7, Vista).

3) Dell Latitude D800. Don't remember the CPU spec offhand, but it's got 2GB RAM and an 80GB HDD. I use this for deployment testing, mostly (MDT/WDS).

4) Gateway MX-something-or-other. Piece of junk with a damaged keyboard. Came to me with a bad power supply. I lopped off the end and soldered it to a 90W Lenovo power supply (I have more of those than 65-watters) and it works great now, for what it is. 1.5GB RAM and an 80GB HDD. I use this for deployment testing, mostly (MDT/WDS).

5) Acer Aspire One D255E. It has a 1.6GHz Atom, 1GB of RAM and a 250GB HDD. It runs Win7 Starter. It used to be my teenage son's machine until it was replaced. I haven't bothered throwing Linux on it yet, but its role is basically watching Netflix / Pandora / ripped DVDs on the big TV.

6) Dell Latitude D620. I don't remember the specs on it, but it's my wife's machine. Nothing special about it; running Win7 Pro x64.

7) T43. This thing is beat to crap, but still works I can't bear to throw it away, but I haven't found anyone to buy it yet. Not currently used.

Work owned, used exclusively by me:

1) T410 from my signature. This is my main work-issued machine. It's got an i5, 8GB, and a 500GB HDD. It's running Win7 Enterprise x64. It should be replaced soon by a Dell Latitude E6420, which I'm actually looking forward to, aside from the keyboard. I'll miss the big disk, but frankly the docking station irritates the crap out of me (everyone in my group has a T410 and we all have problems with the computer freaking out if it's bumped while on the dock). I'll probably make the T410 an iSCSI target at that point and use it as a glorified personal NAS for storing my work VM images.

2) X200. Used as a secondary DC and member server in my personal lab.

3) X61. Used as a deployment tester in my personal lab.

I definitely had way too many computers up until last Sunday, and I felt quite guilty. But I sold two of them that day (a Dell Latitude D810, and a Sony Vaio VPCX113KG), reducing the number of computers that I own to 16. Six of these are used by people in my lab:
- Dell Inspiron 8600
- Dell Precision 390
- Gateway NX860X
- HP dc7900
- HP 8000 Elite
- IBM Thinkpad X31

One is a parts machine that's just standing by to replace the above X31 if it fails:
- IBM Thinkpad X32 with a nonworking screen

So, if I don't count the above, I have 9 "personal" computers. Seven of these get used a lot:
- Apple PowerBook G4 (plays MP3 files at home; holds about 3,500 of my CDs)
- Dell Inspiron 7500 (plays MP3 files at home; holds my other ~2,700 CDs)
- Dell OptiPlex 760 (plays MP3 files at work; holds my entire CD collection)
- Dell OptiPlex 9010 (main home computer)
- HP 8200 Elite ("personal" computer in my lab; on some days I prefer to work in my lab instead of my office)
- HP 8300 Elite (main office computer)
- Panasonic Toughbook CF-Y7 (main mobile computer)

Unfortunately, these two Vaios haven't been used much since I bought them, but I will use them more when I travel more often:
- Sony Vaio SVP13213CXB, "Pro 13"
- Sony Vaio VGN-P530CH
Dell Latitude 7370 (QHD+, 2.84lb); HP Pavilion x2 12-b096ms (1920x1280, 3.14lb); Microsoft Surface 3 (1920x1280, 2.00lb);
Dell OptiPlex 5040 SFF (Core i5-6600); Acer ET322QK, T272HUL; Crossover 404K; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

Thanks for bumping this old thread of yours, PW....

Going through the thread from its beginning, it feels kinda sad to be reminded of some highly valuable members who don't post around here anymore... :(

lol. I did notice that looking back at the beginning of the topic- a lot of people who had high status readings on the forum(multiple feathers, colored names, high post counts, etc.) , I don't see then posting anywhere else at all. Except for a select few, won't name names.

Off that, I noticed I haven't yet posted in this topic, weirdly enough. I won't make some elaborate post on my entire collection or anything... except yes, I do have more than five computers, and no, I'm not in the slightest bit guilty about it. I keep getting told my collection is a wonder, and it worries me day after day that I may need to sell a bit of it to pay for tuition... :( But the reason I'm not guilty that I have all these lovely machines sitting around, is because me, my friends, my roommates, and classmates... we all play LAN and multiplayer games on the computers. And you know, when one guy doesn't bring their laptop, nothing really causes a stir much more than me saying, "Oh, wait! You can borrow the W700ds for the night!"

Thinkpads may just be a brand of laptop to some people, but they still leave a bigger impression than a silly "Fangbook", or "Razer Blade", whatever is the contemporary speed machine.

I've got to give it to you: your signature line is the closest thing I've ever seen to my own "ideal" collection, give or take a couple of pieces.

While I'm still posting - and today is actually the 7th anniversary of me joining this forum - I'm done with collecting...

At various points of my life, I have owned more than 5 computers at once (usually desktops - the only two laptops I've ever owned were the two ThinkPads I had). Didn't really feel 'guilty' as such about owning 5, but I ended up getting rid of them because they were mostly old machines which I had no use for (apart from running old software or software I didn't want on my main PC, eg YouTube Downloaders) and were just taking up some space.

Currently I own two machines - my custom-built desktop and a little ASUS machine with an E5300, 4GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Windows 8.1 Pro x64. It's not the most amazing spec in the world but can be used temporarily if anything ever happened to main desktop.

Adding a third machine to my 'fleet' in the summer, but that's a laptop which will be carried to school each day and used there and if I go away anywhere.

Since I have owned more powerful primary machines, I think the use of virtual machines has replaced having multiple older machines to test software on etc for me at least.

People really like to think owning multiple computers is a shameful hoarding, but it really isn't. It's convenient and a great way to keep yourself in business... if the Windows install on my D900F screws up, I still have my W700ds, which is just as much of a pleasure to use, and is nearly as powerful, and has most of my settings already on it.
and today is actually the 7th anniversary of me joining this forum
Congratulations! Not that it calls for any sort of a celebration. I wouldn't be proud of 7 straight years on a forum. Not that I'm going to stop anybody from being proud about it

Yes, but many of us are taking it too far. 5+ computers for 1 person are almost never, ever justified. :)

I replied in this thread a few years ago and indicated my own "collection". At that time I made a comment how I never buy systems for the sole purpose of collecting, but merely buy new machines when I need them without getting rid of the old ones. Well, since then I actually did start buying some collectibles which I never needed in the first place, and were even considerably weaker than my existing setups.

So I have to say that I am a computer-hoarder-holic now. :D

I forgot this thread existed and it elicited a giggle from me when I read the title :D

I mainly use my T500, X200tablet, and Dell e6510. The T61 is a pre-08/08 model however it has a fabulously bright WSXGA+ screen and runs fairly well so I have decided to keep it. I also have a TR4050e FrankenPad which is my linux box. It only has a 30gb hard drive but #! linux runs well on it. One future purchase I may make for it when I get some extra money is a PATA SSD. The 30gb IDE drive is very noisy. The R50e motherboard is an Intel Integrated graphics type which means I almost never hear the fan and the unit runs very cool.

Do I feel guilty? lol not really. I work hard and I am somewhat of a computer nerd so owning various models of computer gadgetry comes with the territory ;)

I remember this thread from some years ago, and planned to write a follow up. Luckily I read more carefully, and realized I wrote a follow-up last year. Anyway, definitely more than 5 laptops, and definitely no guilty feelings over it. I am a collector, that's for sure. But I have also come to terms with where my collection will stop. After seeing the 440, I realized that anything looking like that has lost the last bit of resemblance with the IBM Thinkpads that I started loving when I got my 360 14 years ago. Maybe a 420, with the last proper keyboard can sneak into my collection. But it stops there.

Since last January, no computer has gone, but I have added a couple of more laptops:
  • T4x. Nice T43p UXGA, bought from member Medessec. This will be the basis for the T50 board conversion, if that ever happens. If not, this will be a nice usable collectible. Along with it, I got a parts T43, with an ok X300 mobo. A week ago, I also bought a "defective" T42, just for the SXGA+ panel. It turned out that it was fully functional and mint, so I plan to maybe put the X300 T43 mobo in it, have a SATA-mod done, and have a T42 SSD'ed "Frankenpad". If a setup like that justifies the Frankenpad designation..

R61i. I bought a batch of 3, consisting of 2 pretty nice nVidia equipped / WSXGA ones and one beaten up Intel one. I sold one nVidia unit for the same price as I paid for all 3, and kept the other two units. The other nVidia one got a T8300 CPU, 4GB of RAM. I brought that one to work, as we due to corporate rules, can no longer install any unauthorized software. So my work-510 is now of less use for me, and I keep the R61i at my desk to do tasks that requires additional software. The Intel one was given to my daughter, as nobody will cry if it gets broken.

Z61m, with the chromed lid. The lid is in good condition, and the protective blue plastic is still on the IBM logo. I have really no use for this laptop, and it has just been sitting on my shelf so far. It will probably get a Win7 install and more or less retire that way.

Dell Latitude D820. Yes, you read correctly. As a Valentines gift for my wife, I bought and swapped a new mobo into her old 820, and it is now up and running again. Beautiful screen! This laptop has some sentimental value for her, so it made her very happy. :)

I did actually LOL at that! Good thing I didn't have anything in my mouth, or my screen and keyboard would be a real mess about now ;)

I don't feel too guilty about it, as I got most of the TPs in my collection for really great deals, and a lot for free. Many of these machines would be in a landfill if I didn't "rescue" them - I console myself with that when I run out of storage space!

I just rescued a black IBM 17 inch CRT monitor (in great shape), and a near-complete desktop (generic case, but with an ASUS MB that appears working) from certain death! It's crazy the good stuff people chuck out! I use that monitor for a TP with broken screen, almost daily. The desktop I should be able to get some good parts from, or might rebuild the whole thing, then I'll have another system!

I use many of my computers regularly for work, sometimes pulling older ones out for specific tasks. Those that are too old to be functional for daily use are great collector's items and just fun to have! Having a lot of older computers (like the older TPs I prefer) doesn't have to be expensive, so it's usually a cheap hobby for me. I usually only buy computers I know I can get some use out of, rather than to try and fill out a (TP) collection.

I have several old desktops that are in need of repair that I just didn't get rid off, as I knew they could be fixed and will be one day when I get to them. I wish I had kept all my old computers over the years that I did get rid of, but I wasn't much into repairing them back then.

Some people tell me they have some old computers their throwing out and their the people that sell at flee markets and one day I saw a few ThinkPads that I saved from the trash. a ThinkPad 380Z, 380ED, 560, SUN SPARCstation 5 and a DIGITAL desktop. I repaired the 2 ThinkPad 380Z,380ED and sold them, sold the SUN and the DIGITAL I think threw out as it didnt power on and when I pluged it in the entire case shocked me. Still have the 560 upstairs with all the other ThinkPad parts from my previeus business. I miss buying and repairing the IBM ThinkPads to like new, even bought brand new stickers for them "Intel inside, Desiged for Windows" But today no one wants anything but tablets or a $200 laptop if you just want to browes the interent. Witch when I was fixing the ThinkPads, laptops were $800-$3K. Now you can buy a dirt cheap laptop/tablet brand new and replace it just as easy now instead of sending it in for repair.

 I have an old PC mag advertising Dell Dimension white towers with Pentium II CPUs and 8GB Hard Drives... for $2999. And there's an article on an HP machine, a side flat-laying desktop for $799, discussing the pros and cons of the "ultimate value machine".

Good god... things have come a long way. My parents got a bit irritated when an old Compaq laptop with a Celeron CPU and Intel 810M graphics disappeared into my inventory (I know where it is now), but I kept telling them that it's beyond worthless... it has numerous hardware-related problems, the battery's dead, and there's lines on the screen. But they insisted I find it, so they can decide what to do with it.

They're still stuck in that time... when computers were not just accessories, they were vital tools of trade. Like cars.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

Lots of people are. Even though the prices of computers have dropped nearly tenfold over the past 20 years, in fact much more than tenfold if inflation is factored in, many people still expect the same build quality and customer service. They continue to regard computers as premium commodities, regardless of how little money they have spent on them.

The amount something costs is relative to how much you earn/have. For some people, spending £300 on a computer is a lot of money. For others, it's a pittance. Whilst I appreciate that you cannot have premium build quality on every product (especially the 'cheaper ones'), when you have paid for any product, be it a car or a computer or something else, you do like to think that it is backed by decent customer service. Being polite, informative, helpful and having manners costs nothing, so why should you only receive good customer service and have the most helpful representatives on only the more expensive products?

Just saw this neat thread on the rss feed.

I'll play.

I have 12 at use right now, and I'll count the work pc since i do use it regularly.

HP Z620 - Work workstation - Creo5.0, dual Xeon, 12gb ram, yadda yadda. The CAD machine.

Homebuilt Q6600 / 4gb / Debian 7.2 / 3.2 Terabyte Raid 5 - home server

Homebuilt AMD - Debian 7.2 / iptables firewall

HP G560 Win7 - wife's personal laptop

T60p 14.1" T7200 / 3GB - Son's laptop

T61 15.4" T7500 / 2GB - Wifes new computer

R60/T61 hybrid - My main laptop

R52 - dead motherboard

T61 14.1" nvidia - new play toy

Dell optiplex something - daughter's main pc

Zotac mini-itx ION - mythtv frontend

Mini-ITX Intel corei3 - mythtv frontend

And those are just the ones i can think of. I could probably build a few more, but these are the ones that are serviceable.
They all have uses. I tend to add them as i find need for them. A networked / home automation focused house tends to breed computers in my opinion.

Still only got my i5 2500K gaming PC and my little E5300 ASUS desktop.

Oh boy. I am not sure how many comps I currently have. Let me try to see if I can list them. (I won't list any that I have just picked up to find new homes for.)

1)T61 in 14" T60 chassis. My current daily driver laptop.
2)AthlonX2 desktop w Dell 23" LCD (primarily just a print server now)
3)AtlonX2 Brushed alum case media PC. This gets used multiple times per week.
4)Atom firewall, NSF server. On 24/7. Stores vids/etc for media pc.
5)Eeepc 900a running Xubuntu. Was my travel laptop until T61 came into my life. Collects dust now.
6)Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop, Pentium2. Debian. Was the first laptop I ever owned. Still runs good. Collects a lot of dust.
7)Fujitsu Stylistic tablet. win 8.1 trial. Collects a lot of dust.
8)eMac G4, tiger, dust collector
9)T22, Linux, Mostly dust collector
10)T23, Linux, Mostly dust collector
11)701c, win95, decoration
12a)600e, win2k, Debian. Mostly dust collector 12b)spare 600e for parts
13)T41, dust collector
14)MSI laptop with broken screen, used as win7 desktop with external monitor. Mostly dust collector.
15)Old Intel nightshade dual P3 linux tower. Debian. Mostly dust.
16) HP/Compaq P3 with win98se. Full system, tower, tube monitor, speakers, etc. All in like new condition. Just sitting in storage for the day I decide to become a retro gamer or some [censored].
17)R500, WIP

There are probaly about a half dozen other functioning older thinkpads and some old 486/386/8088 systems just sitting in storage.

Do I feel guilty? Not really. What would I do with them? Most are old enough that no one is going to want them, they would just end up getting recycled.

The model # I don't recall off the top of my head. They are at my corporate office and I am only there once a week for our staff meetings. 99% of the time I am in the field with my laptop(s). But I think they are Phenom Black Editions. I will have to look next time I am in the office. Typically I boot them, run Windows and MSE updates, check facebook, then shut them down. Sad as I used to use one of them as my primary rig and it's still a beastly powerful computer.

But lately (the last 2 years) I have moved to laptops on tablets. Those 2 AMD towers will be the last towers I ever own unless I decide to build another Sun Microsystems machine again (for fun and nostalgia).

Right now my main rig is my Latitude E6520. With it's quad core i7, Nvidia GPU and now 16GB of RAM, it's a beastly powerful portable machine. I love this computer. I love it even more since I haven't spend one penny on it. One of my clients gave it to me. Actually, all the Dell's I own that I posted about above were free. This E6520 and my D630 are my favorite machines at this point in time. A nice combination of power and portability between the 2 machines. I might ditch the D630 for a 14" i5 unit. Haven't decided which model yet, but I am 99% sure it will be a Dell Latitude because to my knowledge no Thinkpad T series, iSeries CPU has a backlit keyboard and I refuse to own another laptop without one. I denied myself that pleasure after using my Powerbook G4 and for years I wanted that feature back. Now that I have it again, I refuse to give it up.

This post brought to you by my E6520. Sitting here browsing the web on the couch, VLC playing my playlist from The Xx (awesome band). The machine runs cool and quiet, but can spool up to beast mode if needed. I really, really love this computer.

I forgot about this thread! I am happy to report that even though I now possess 14 computers, they are all used regularly. That being said, I could downsize my collection a little. My Gateway NX860X laptop has been on loan to one of my lab members. When he is done with it, I will sell it. Further, my Sony Pro13 and HP Pavalion x2 are somewhat redundant, and could be replaced by the Microsoft Surface 3.
Dell Latitude 7370 (QHD+, 2.84lb); HP Pavilion x2 12-b096ms (1920x1280, 3.14lb); Microsoft Surface 3 (1920x1280, 2.00lb);

Even though I'm nowhere near the ≥5 computers in the title of this thread, I can tell how it went when I tried to downsize my collection. It was a serious attempt to reduce my collection with 1 (one) laptop. Over the last years I have obtained two T42s with IPS SXGA+ panels and the better ATI 9600 graphics, so I decided that my third T42, a XGA / ATI 7500 low spec unit had to go. I want to focus on quality and not necessarily quantity. So I went ahead and advertised it on the forum, for free, for the cost of shipping. Several people were interested, but something always came in the way, or shipping simply became too expensive. So I lost patience and pulled the plug on that one. Instead I offered it to a guy at work that I know likes to play with old tech stuff. He was interested, but right now, one month later, it's still sitting on a shelf in my office at work. So if it doesn't get picked up within the next weeks, I will simply remove the RAM, the optical drive and the HDD, and put it in the e-waste container here at work. Maybe I'll regret this when (if) the T42 becomes a real collectible, but for now they haven't quite reached that stage, and it's too old for really being up to every day tasks anymore.

So all in all a serious attempt to downsize, and the collection was down one unit. But some weeks later I went ahead and bought my long sought after 600X, so the effect of the downsizing didn't last long..
