GMail Invite Request / Other free e-mail opinions

#1 Post by k3vb0t » Fri Nov 26, 2004 12:30 am

Short story: My parents recently relocated due to my Mom's job situation, and my Dad, an avid e-mailer/browser/photography nut doesn't have access to his computer from their new location (they are keeping their current residence and he plans to travel back and forth, so the internet and his computer stay there). So he is looking for a free e-mail alternative so he can at least keep up with friends from the local library.

Edit: Also, this isn't going to be a long term (probably 12-18 months) job for my Mom, so they don't really want to purchase a new machine and pay for access their also (I offered to build them a desktop, but want to avoid that, thus the library).

Having my current bias that Google does everything well, I figured Gmail would be the best. Other opinions? Hotmail? Yahoo?

Only thing he is a real 'stickler' for worrying about privacy or giving up too much personal information. GMail still #1?

Much thanks... and if you have a free invite, he would really appreciate it!

fastmail

#5 Post by nikemen » Sun Nov 28, 2004 12:04 pm

I really like fastmail, it is free as well and allows POP and IMAP access.

I setup my mom this way, so that all her clients, work, home and online all are synced via IMAP. This made it easier than having to say,

"well, you downloaded those emails at work so they are not on your work machine"

or, "yes, you are getting duplicates at home, since work only downloads a copy"

when it asks you what e-mail to send it to, just put yours in, then check your e-mail for the link they give you

I actually just make up a bogus address rather than putting my own information in there. The e-mail bounces, and I pull the links out of the Sent folder.

I would like to recommend www.hushmail.com. They provide free accounts with full 128mb encryption and pgp comptable encryped mail services!

Yup, we're a bit of a closed community in some ways, so we take care of our own. (Closed in the sense that these forums don't get as many hits as, say, Slashdot or some other forums where folks are literally on the knees begging for invites.)

I may have another 4 later this week. Fingers crossed.

i run my own mailserver, so no need for .....

still something to share:

for long i used a hotmail account for the expected garbage etc.
but it is soooo SLOW.

now i use www.mail.ru
webbased and POP

start with eng.mail.ru and you will not have a problem with russian language. For translating the occasional admin mail : delete it or use www.translate.ru

lets all think about this GMAIL thing..

google is not an altrustic organization..?! right..??

google does not do something for nothing..

few do..

so buisiness model for gmail is that when you actually USE it, it examines the content of the email and will then use key words from the content to attach an advertisement to the email and then deliver it to the eyeballs of some hapless reader..
right..?!
am i missing something..?
i think not..

bye bye privacy..!

hello 1984 a generation late..

not for me, thanks..

not even for a free email account..

i will happily pay the $10 a month for something close to privacy, thanks..

No, sorry, that's wrong. Google automagically scans for key words in incoming e-mail and displays relevant TEXT ads along the side or bottom of the screen as *I'm* reading the e-mail. No ads get sent out attached to e-mails.

For example, looking at an e-mail from the IBMWR mailing list right now, I see 2 discreet text links below the e-mail on the page. The e-mail is about a motorcycle gathering in Racine, Wisconsin. One of the links is to an article about Shawano, Wisconsin being selected as one of the sites for the Badger State Games (hockey) on the Shawano Leader's web-site. The other is a link to classified ads for motorcycles in the Milwaukee area.

Looking at an e-mail conversation from the TP mailing list discussing where TPs are made, I see 2 text links in the side margin for finding an Taiwan manufacturer and a China yellow pages DVD.

No muss; no fuss. And we all know how picky I am.

we know, we know.. :)

but i am far more picky of anyone ANYONE, even a computer, other than the recipient, reading my email..

period..

and,
i refuse to be a venue for free advertising..

i don't want to be treated to an ad when reading email now..
its not enough we all are spammed to death..?

we all know that different opinions make for horse races..

the part i love about gmail is the archive feature... it helps so you can save those messages that are important to you, but don't really belong in any folder.
