22 years old.

ThinkPad T30...and eyeballing a replacement - maybe X40, but I'd prefer a T4x if it were as sturdy as my T30 or the X40, as they are both bulletproof!

my very first thinkpad was a 700C in 1994 or thereabouts..
when wife and i were living aboard my boat..
we had recently returned from summer in connecticut to miami beach when i drove up to an auction in atlanta and bought 14 AST notebooks..
in the process of selling those i took a 700C in as payment for one of the AST Power Exec notebooks..

and i never looked back.. :)

I'm 17. I'll be 18 in April.

Was given a 350c in 1998, got rid of it in 2000 and instantly regretted it.
Bought a 760ED in 2003, got rid of it in early 2004.
Bought an HP OmniBook 800CT in early 2004, it died a few months later.
Bought my 380ED in November 2004. (for $60.00, instantly paid for itself)
Bought my 760E in December 2004. (for $25.00, I have mixed opinions about the computer)
Recieved my 600E last week and am now looking for a motherboard for it.

Turning 45 this month. First ThinkPad was in '97...haven't looked back since. Before that I had a Compaq and before that an Apple...that was in the early to mid 80's.

In '86 (that is 1986) .. in my mid 40's .. I got my hand on an early COMPAQ luggable .. probably stretched my arm by a few inches for lugging this 30+ pound "sewing machine" from the office every night .. trying to understand what I might do with this contraption.

A few months later one of my collegues bootlegged an HP Portable (ROM-RAM DOS box) on his corporate credit card, and 'requisitioned" it to continue my learning. This puny laptop put me on the track of a "portable office visionary".

Soon I bought my own HP PortablePLUS systems with all the bells and whistles .. $11,000. BRRR! But never had a desktop on my desk.

In '97 I migrated briefly to a used IBM 755XD .. in '98 I bought my new TP765D .. that needed a few service trips over the years to IBM .. and had excellent experience with IBM ever since.

In 2003, I bought my A31p, and in 2004 got a second A31p.

Of the thousands of hours I spent working on PC's since '86 .. I can state that I spent probably fewer than 20 hours on a desktop .. any desktop.

Finally .. after all these years .. the high-end notebooks deliver respectable performance for the heavy duty apps that support my work.

And I hope that my next notebooks will be IBM ThinkPad models.

My TP setup

#20 Post by asiafish » Mon Feb 21, 2005 1:02 pm

I'm 37, and got my first ThinkPad (T20) two-years-ago for law school.

The T20 was still under warranty and after three systemboard replacements, IBM sent me a brand-new T22 as a replacement, which I still have.

18-months-ago bought an X21 with ultrabase, but I only kept it for six months as I switched to the Apple platform and sold the X21 (still have the ultrabase X2 and a near-new battery if anyone is interested).

I also had a 570 for a few months before getting the X21, but sold it to a co-worker as it wasn't enough smaller than the T20 to make up for its sacrifices (the reason I bought the X21).

I'd like to get either a newer T4x (love the 4.5lb weight) as the only non-Apple task that my current T22 won't do is play modern games. I know laptops are not the best for games anyway, but I really dislike desktop computer and change my computing habits to accomodate one.

23 years old (24 next march).

Bought my first thinkpad (T42) just as they came out. Currently using it (and loving it) in my first year of law school. I've convinced 3 of my friends to get T42s also...

Law School

#22 Post by asiafish » Mon Feb 21, 2005 6:45 pm

Congrats on law school and best of luck. My T22 is all primed and ready for the CA bar, and served well for all those law school notes and exams.
