Sister Forum?

#1 Post by Sand » Sun Feb 27, 2005 12:48 pm

Hello,

Does anyone here know if there is a forum that is strictly on IBM desktops, like this one on notebooks?

I'm sure many of you own desktops, as well. I have the ThinkPad, but would like to get a desktop, and need some help in knowing how to choose. They don't seem to come in packages with monitor, speakers, etc all together, and I find it confusing.

Thanks in advance,
Sand

I'd be surprised if there was. Except for specialty kinds of things like Alienware, desktops in general just don't seem to engender the same kind of passion that notebooks do. My opinion is that they're all just beige boxes (yes, I know most of them are black now). The only one I own is a 1996-vintage PS/2, and it hasn't been turned on in several years. I should probably just part it out to some of the Micro-channel enthusiasts.

Unless you have some really special needs, just go buy whatever package deal-of-the-week IBM or Dell has available, and you'll be fine.

i buiild up my own boxes, usually..
just finishing a box with a 300gb sata array-1 and 250gig boot drive, two DVD-everything drives and a matrox parhelia 256meg triple head video card, three dell FP2001 displays and the usual array of perhiperlals..

nonny is right about the deal of the day..
much easier to just buy a box and use it.. :)

Now, see, that's how boring I find desktops - I couldn't even get enthused enough to bother! ;-)

I have an IBM NetVista A30 Desktop that runs much the same stuff as my laptop. Bill, if you want to establish an IBM Desktop group, I will watch it and attempt to participate as I am able to.

When IBM had its forum, the desktop forum was little used compared to the ThinkPad forum, but it was used.

Yeah, it was like an echo chamber in there.

I work in healthcare...we have ThinkCentre M50 desktops. Not the most glamorous, but ThinkPads all over wouldn't be very feasible.

Anyways, I'd be happy to help moderate a desktop forum as well.

Thanks Bill, I always look at "New Posts" when I enter, so if anyone posts there, I will endeavour to assist.

Bill, can you also set up a "Remote Access" group. I have on my T41:
1. Ethernet
2. Wireless
3. Local dial-up
4. International dial-up
5. Sony Ericsson wireless

I would be pleased to assist there as well. ... JD Hurst

Add my vote to JD's for a "Remote Access" group, especially as it applies to WiFi and wireless.

I have the same connections on my T40 as JD has on his T41 plus my Verizon cell phone's ability to connect as an external modem, including access to the Verizon hi-speed network.

i would do that but i don't want to create TOO many groups..

so, that said, do you think there are sufficient posts asking about generic remote access questions..?

It's hard to say. We had a discussion about cross functional groups a while back, and Remote Access probably is something that will be of interest to many ThinkPad owners, regardless of model type. Actually, it might get more traffic than the Desktop group. ... JD Hurst

remote access, networking and the like

#14 Post by friedrich-eugen » Wed Apr 06, 2005 3:38 am

Bill,

I should like to see such a forum, too. As I feel that virtual networking / remote access is becoming more and more important, for several reasons:

(1) Broadband access to the internet and - therefore - virtual networking becomes a standard feature with a lot of people in their daily joblife.

My wife is working this way since about 10 years. Even the state "governement" of Hamburg, I'm with, is using remote access / virtual networking for a certain part of its employees as a standard. Quite a lot of businesses do use this feature nowadays.

Broadband access to the internet is concidered an economic must with the services industries (even with small towns and villages here).

(2) In order to stay online, without being attacked, without being under illegitimate "control", You have to generate not only knowledge concerning Your system, but also concerning the networks (!) you are part of, i. e. (a) your home-network and (b) your internet path / virtual network, you are using.

This is quite a job, if you want to stay ahead (at least with) of the crowd, although your are not a trained sysop or netadmin.

http://www.BroadbandReports.com has active wireless forums, and many more, too. ThinkPad, and IBM, users are well represented.

one NO vote so far..

but if asked i will convert this etcetera confrence (since it seems to be wildly under-used) to a discussion on wireless and remote access on thinkpads..

fair..?

well, it is not that i am a fanatic desktop box type..
but i hate paying the big bucks an array would cost from ibm or dell or h/p..

so i build exactly what i want..

bear in mind i have been doing this since 1975..
in those days it took some electronic assembly skill and a bit of knowledge of EVERYTHING..
no all thast is required is a week of reading and a week of hardware assembly once it is all at hand..
the only advantage i see to buying something already built is the support and the OS already in place..

I've been building my own boxes since the mid 1990's, so I haven't been doing it as long as you. I also built two notebooks (my two 760's, here's a link to the blog: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?p=61844#61844) Now, I do say I'm probably never going to buy a new computer, once you start building your own desktop's, there's no going back, but for the people who don't build their own computers, the support and OS already being in place can be a major factor in making the descision on their new computer.

I don't think I could ever buy a desktop system. Not after seeing the mark up from building my own system. You can build what most companies sale for 2,000 for about 1,000 you pay a lot for support and a name on the computer.

I agree with alpha once you build your own you can never go back. I've been building systems since the late 90's. I think the first system I build was like 98. I was amazed at how easy it was...just follow all the manuals the stuff comes with and your set...figuring out the correct components I needed the first time was a bit much as I had no knowledge about anything...

I think one thing about it is I just like to build things. I could careless what it is. but, the fact I can say I put that together just gives me great Accomplishment.

I've built all my computers & servers; Except for a killer deal I got two years ago for a Dell DUAL Xeon 2.8ghz 10k 36GB SCSI and 512MB DDR for $600 clams. At the time, the cheapest I could get the Xeon's for was $500 EACH, and the server came with TWO, plus case, psu, gigabit controller, ect.

Plugged it in & threw on SuSE & it was ready to go.
