Thinkpad 600X miniPCI wifi

#1 Post by unlawfulsoup » Tue May 06, 2025 3:34 pm

I just finished restoring my 600X with some pretty good results. There is one thing I was considering, I noticed there is a modem card or something, and apparently the 600X has a mini-PCI slot. I did some googling and apparently one can put a wifi card in this slot potentially. Anyone have suggestions for a reasonable option. I am thinking a G capable card that supports Win2k would be pretty much perfect.

In the PC Card slot on the right, you can put a 16-bit PCMCIA or 32-bit Cardbus (Wi-Fi) card.
All you need to do is find one that suits your needs.

You could try the Atheros WiFi-G card that's used in some T40-T43 models, FRU 73P4301.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

It would be very difficult to get a wifi signal without having any antennas...
And even more difficult without even having a slot for such a card!

I'm fairly certain that used this card (and a couple of others, with less success) with a 600X ages ago:

It wasn't exactly fast, but it worked.

The 600X was a beautiful machine, and I was sorry to see mine go, but, without built-in ethernet, it simply wasn't practical.

Okay thanks for the replies. I was not thinking about the antenna thing, totally wooshed me. I just saw the slot and thought hmm. I have a few G wifi cards like the one Edward mentioned, I just got caught up in the 'elegance' of not having a card sticking out.
