Thinkpad 770 and Selectadock III GPU Issue

#1 Post by unlawfulsoup » Sat Jul 05, 2025 9:02 pm

Hopefully one of the few people who has a selectadock and/or familiarity with Windows 98 can help. So I got my crowning jewel Selectadock III setup going. Everything functions excellently, except I have one annoying issue I have no idea if it is possible to get working. Right now my setup is Thinkpad 770 w/Windows 98 (95 OEM image upgraded to 98SE), an internal Matrox Millennium II (VGA,DVI), and IBM 17" VGA 4:3 monitor. Once the drivers were installed, the external display works beautifully with the Matrox card with zero issues. The main LCD on the laptop however is non-functional as Windows 98 disables the Trident videocard powering the LCD on the 770. Is there anyway to get the 770 internal video to power its display while the Matrox continues to power the external display? Ideally I would love to run both which would make this setup perfect for my use, which is writing.

Windows 98 SE said it supports dual VGA cards and monitors working as extended desktop displays. However, I tried 2 VGA cards with Win98 on a real desktop machine long ago, windows could identify both monitors and showed some text on the 2nd one, but I never got the extended desktop working. One monitor remains black while the main monitor works well.
I have selectadock III, but I have no extra VGA card to test that now. All I can suggest is that you switch to Windows 2000 or XP which have better dual monitor support.

Yeah, I had more luck on Windows 2000 with a Thinkpad 600. I just mainly use my 770 which I have comfortably setup with 98SE.
