Rodger
I always intended to upgrade to a CD-RW/DVD-R/RW, but I never got around to it. I got as far as obtaining a variety of different original 770/E/ED/X/Z drives, with the intention of investigating which caddies I might be able to use to swap in a new drive.cmarti wrote:The drive is the same one as in other laptops, the only difference is that it does not uses a connector at the back it has a cable soldered in place and that is the connector. No removable one, so it seems that the only way to go if i want to upgrade my current drive is ebay.
I can vouch for this as I transplanted the old 8171 from my 770X with an 8178 (can read/play "burned" DVDs as well as DVD-RAM). The only two issues you'll probably have to worry about is the bezel not fitting correctly (see if you can use the old one if that's the case), and if the drive has a switch to make it "see" whether it's a master or slave drive or if the "switch" is based in the firmware. If the latter is the case, make sure you get the right one as firmware updates to change the positioning (master or slave) are rarely available.pkiff wrote: Best Bet:

Depending on the drive, you may have to shim the eject button on the faceplate with some thin foam or tape (underneath the button) so it engages the switch, and you might have to break off one or more of the mounting tabs on the inside of the faceplate and just glue the whole thing (faceplate&tray) together.pkiff wrote: I'm also hoping that I can take the front faceplate off the SR-8171-L and use it directly on the UJDA-750 -- the eject button and activity light look like they may line up correctly, and it looks like the connections on the rear of the faceplate may be almost (but not exactly) identical. If everything goes as well as possible, then all I will have to do is drill an extra emergency eject hole in the current SR-8171-L faceplate.
Great news!cmarti wrote:I receive the drive [...] and is is working perfectly it is burning cd's and i saw a planet of the apes movie.
Still waiting for the drive I ordered to arrive -- it takes a while for items to cross the US-Canada border, and I ordered from a seller in the States.cmarti wrote:How it's going for you?
I had to trim the faceplate a little and it is looking good just a little gap around the plate, the color of the plate is a dark charcoal gray when closed it's looks black.[quote="pkiffWhat did you do about replacing the front bezel/faceplate on the drive? Does the new one have spaces or gaps above/below the tray that your new faceplate doesn't cover up?

It was USD $36 + $8 shipping = $44.00:cmarti wrote:How much did you pay for the drive?

When i receive the new drive i will take pictures of the original casing so you can see the inside.Does anyone have pictures of inside the original drive?

Another data point for anyone trying this:pkiff wrote:Best Bet:
M a t s u s h i t a SR-8171-L DVD Drive
IBM FRU: 05k9066 ASM P/N: 05K9065
Date: 9909 Rev: 304
Connector:
Appears to be a standard internal IDE connector fully compatible with current standard slimline 12mm CD/DVD drives.
Soldered Connector:
Sanyo CRD-S372BDB 24X CD-ROM Drive
IBM FRU: 02K0515 ASM P/N: 02K0513
Date: November 1998 Rev: 104
Connector:
This appears to be a non-standard, soldered connector. I didn't open up the drive itself to verify this, but the cable ribbon disappears inside the actual drive instead of connecting to a visible plug.
Slighly Off-Center Connector:
Toshiba SD-C2002 DVD Drive
IBM FRU: 05K9014 ASM P/N: 05K9013
Date: 9806 Rev: 003
Connector:
This appears to use something that looks like a standard slimline connector plug, but the plug does not quite line up with the location of the connector plug on current/recent slimline drives. I did not open up the actual drive to verify anything, but it looks like it would not fit a standard slimline drive.
