Laptop set to use headset mic, but still uses built-in mic.

#1 Post by AverydayFurry » Sat Aug 03, 2024 12:46 am

Just as the title says. Laptop is a Thinkpad E15 Gen 2. My ThinkPad is set to use my headset mic, but when I check the recording devices in sound settings the headset mic is shown as not picking up any audio. I've tried messing with my audio settings, device settings, drivers, and Discord settings (as Discord is where the problem was first noticed). I have checked gain settings, and the built-in mic is disabled, yet it's still using it. A friend suggested checking the driver "Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel(R) SST), but the driver appears to be missing. Help would be appreciated.
Also I couldn't figure out how to attach screenshots, as the image links weren't recognized when I put them in the "img img/" thing, so I linked them as URL's instead. I initially posted the question to the Thinkpad subreddit, and got no responses, so I figured here would be a better place to look for help. The screenshots are from that reddit upload.

Welcome to the forum. :D

Which headset is it? Does the mic work with other devices? Other Thinkpads perhaps?

The combo headphone/mic jack has more than one kind of wiring, and they are not fully compatible with one another.

It's a GTheos wireless headset, connected using the USB adapter it came with. It was fine up until about a week ago. My other headset works fine, but its ear cushions hurt my ears after a while, hence why I'd prefer to wear my newer Gtheos headset. As far as I know the Gtheos works with my phone, but I don't have another thinkpad to try it on.

Here is the exact headset I'm trying this with:

Ah, so it's a USB headset. It should appear then as a separate audio device. I assume the headphones part of it works well, just the mic isn't working? That's weird. Can you post a screenshot of your "Recording" tab in mmsys.cpl? The upload attachments has been disabled for this forum, but you can use Imgur or similar resources, or just upload to your own Reddit thread - it might be useful there as well.

Just in case - are there any drivers for it that headset that can be installed?

Yes, they work as headphones just fine. And as far as I know the drivers for the headset are up to date. It shows up as Captain 300 on the computer. When I have it connected and check input devices, it shows up at the top, however when I talk only the built-in mic picks up audio, even if I have it set to use the headset.

Thank you for your help, by the way!

That's quite strange.

Did you try the suggestion(s) in their FAQ regarding mic not working?
https://www.gtheos.com/faq

They do mention there is a 3.5mm jack option. Did you try connecting via that (without the USB dongle)?

I have followed those troubleshooting methods, yeah. I don't have an aux to aux cable lying about, so I ordered one. I'll see if that works any better. I did discover, I think, that the laptop *is* using the headset mic, but it's super quiet and it doesn't show any audio coming in on the recording tab of sound settings. I tried the "listen" option for the Gtheos in the sound settings, and I could hear myself talk, but it was quiet. So strange. Hopefully the headphone jack works, thank you!
