Issue with Bootable BIOS CD
I tried downloading and using the Bootable BIOS CD (1.20 - gruj16us.iso).
I've tried downloading it twice, tried to burn the DVD 4 times (using growisofs, Brasero, wodim) and using windows in a vmware, across two different DVD burners. Each time the disc burns successfully but it is unbootable either by the X1 Carbon or other thinkpad.
Anyone have any luck creating the Bootable BIOS CD in linux?
I've toasted my Windows partition so the Windows BIOS program is not an option.

Re: Issue with Bootable BIOS CD
Have you tried a different mediums, such as USB sticks and different CDs/DVDs? I have noticed that all ISOs will successfully be burned to USB sticks or DVDs in Linux, but only certain ISOs ones will be bootable for some reason. However, in Windows, I have found that all ISO burnings work and boot. I think some ISOs lack proper boot settings or files that programs, such as Rufus (windows), append at the end of the burn, unlike DD or unetbootin in Linux.

Re: Issue with Bootable BIOS CD
Thx for the suggestion. I think Lenovo needs to update their README. I thought maybe there was some special way to create these discs, I had to double check their "double click an external program will run to write to disc"-type vauge instruction.
I did finally get this thing to work. For anyone having the same problem, here is what I did / what the problem was.
After 4 burns onto DVDs using various methods as described, I decided to check out the BIOS for any hidden "traps". I noticed there was a setting for flashing from CD and it was enabled. In the boot section, I noticed I had Legacy only. I switched that to BOTH and was able to boot up off the DVD and go through the cycles of reboots to finish the flashing. I had to switch it back to Legacy only so I could boot up off my grub2 install. Will look at installing grub efi on this machine someday.
BIOS update has allowed me to suspend in linux. We'll see if it also fixes the stability issues with the fn pad with kernel 3.15+. I noticed on booting up kernel 3.13 after the update, my e-ink row was not illuminated, but the presses still appeared to work. It only illuminated when I was shutting down. It appears to be fully working in 3.15 including adaptic.
Now if only I could get the middle scroll working.

I have used the xinput method without any problems. For using the config file, make sure you check each distribution, since the location for the file may need to be different.

I've been using that xinput method forever on my other Thinkpads but it doesn't work on the X1 Carbon. The new laptops require you to patch evdev. I've applied the patch following some procedures posted online, and it is using the patched drive, but the functionality still doesn't work. I haven't had time to pursue it any further yet.
