Possible Fan Issues

#1 Post by Halpz » Wed Aug 22, 2012 4:55 pm

After a long night of gaming on my T530, I began hearing some strange whirring sounds, and I noticed that there seemed to be a noise, as in a slight scratching (well, it didn't sound destructive, but it sounded like some kind of friction, and it sounded very odd) coming from near the left side of my laptop. It seems to mostly show up when it is tilted at an angle.

After a few hours, the noise has stopped, but I have a feeling that my fan may have stopped working. For the last few hours, it seems to be running somewhat hotter than usual, and I can't feel any air coming out of the exhaust, as well as not being able to hear my fan. (I can usually hear it when it gets up to high speeds). System performance is also down, I'm noticing framerate issues within some games of mine that just a few days ago I was running very smoothly.

And, most noteworthy, there is a slight metallic burning smell. I've checked my power settings, and my laptop is set to use the fan as much as I can see being possible, but I'm still getting nothing. I've restarted it several times, and am still getting nothing.

I've looked into the issue, and it seems that if my laptop was truly overheating, it would be shutting itself down, which it is not doing.

Does anybody have any suggestions to remedy the situation, and/or a suggestion on how to check fan speed? (if I need to download a program, preferably something trustworthy and specifically designed for checking fan speed)

Thanks

You might want to find a way to check temperatures as well
Speedfan should be able to work in addition to giving you temperatures and I'd consider it trustworthy software. If the fan has indeed failed, getting it serviced soon might be a good idea too.
Even if it does seem strange to be failing so soon

And the tried and true:

I run on all 3 my machines. Donated $10. I hope it works on your T530, though a bit disappointed that the new TP's still have the same fan issues. I'm looking to get a T530 next.
