I ordered a T440p

#1 Post by AnakiMana » Wed Oct 30, 2013 3:32 am

I was eagerly awaiting the day these models would be available. Tonight I customized a T440p and placed my order.

Here's the specs I went for:
  • Intel Core i5-4300M Processor (3MB Cache, up to 3.30GHz)
  • Windows 8 Pro 64
  • 14.0FHD (1920x1080) IPS Screen
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M 1GB
  • 4GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600MHz SODIMM (I will upgrade WAY cheaper myself!)
  • Backlit Keyboard
  • Fingerprint Reader
  • 720p HD Camera
  • 500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm (I will upgrade WAY cheaper myself!)
  • DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim w/ SW Royalty for Windows 8
  • Smart Card Reader
  • 9 Cell Li-Ion Cylindrical Battery 99.9Wh
  • 90W AC Adapter - AG
  • Intel Dual Band Wireless 7260AC with Bluetooth 4.0
  • Integrated Mobile Broadband upgradable
  • Warranty: 1 Year Depot or Carry-in
  • 3YR Onsite + Accidental Damage Protection
Base price is $979. Customized, it was $1,534 + 221.99 for the 3YR onsite+accidental damage warranty. I tried to find any coupon code that I could, even signing up for the Lenovo newsletter (10% coupon as a reward). It didn't work, and the footnote said "for eligible products" so I figured it didn't apply.

But let me tell you, I clicked on the CHAT button, and even though it was around 12:30am, a rep was offering me help in less than 10 seconds. He said that model is having some issues on their website that should be resolved in 3-4 hours. But then he offered to help me with the order, put in a coupon for $153.40 off (10%) and personally processed the order for me.

I'm really happy with Lenovo support right now. Maybe my story will help someone else.

Very nice indeed. Interestingly, it looks like only the FHD is IPS according to the tech specs. I'd be more comfortable with HD+.

Of course, that rep's local time was around 12:30 PM, in India. Now you like outsourcing!

Thank goodness these are finally available! I have been waiting to replace my T60/1p Frankenpad for sooooo long, and there has been exactly nothing that looked like it would fit the bill until now.

Anyone think that there might be some Black Friday deals coming up on the new T440x models?

I'm confused about the battery.

I did a live chat with a Lenovo rep today, asking if they were going to offer a battery slice for the T440p, since there is not an option to add it via their configuration tool; he said yes, and that there would be a 3 or 6-cell slice option (at some point, apparently).

He insisted there is a built-in 3-cell battery in the T440p. I then asked if he meant the 6-cell and 9-cell options offered were the slice, but he told me that the 6 or 9 cell is the "normal battery". So, normal in addition to the built-in battery? Or that dude (and this one) confused?

AGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*why* can't I configure a T440p with a quad core processor and Intel graphics only! :( This drives me crazy and I was hoping I'd have the option on this generation to finally get a quad core processor without discrete graphics...

The 440p looks close... I just hate the deletion of the latch, light, and the keyboard in general. If they offered the old keyboard and either the latch or light as an option, I'd jump on it. So close lenovo, so close.

Why not just disable the nVidia GPU in BIOS? Since this gen, Lenovo changed the connection of the display-outputs. They are now all connected to the integrated iGPU, so if you want to use a external monitor, the ports will still be active without the nVidia GPU. This was different for former ThinkPads like the T430, where the display-outputs were connected to the nVidia GPU.

Mostly because i didn't know they made that change in this generation of Thinkpads - and neither does Lenovo support as that very question is asked at least 2 times with the Q/A associated with the T440p at the Lenovo site and there is no official response yes or no.

Do you happen to have a link from Lenovo with the above? I assume this also means with the nVidia card disabled in the BIOS you can use all of the digital ports on the dock with just the Intel integrated graphics? Thanks!

Yes, thats correct. All new ThinkPads can drive 3 displays at the same time (Integrated Display + 2 external monitors, or 3 external monitors), with the exception of the W540 in Advanced mode, which can drive up to 6 display.
