Mods for T440p heatsink?

#1 Post by cultOfThinkpad » Wed Jul 12, 2023 2:46 am

I currently own a T440p, had avidly searched around for mods and upgrades for it and I remember coming across
an article where someone said they managed to modify their heatsink to further improve cooling.

Mine is the CPU-only model with the 00HM903 Cooler (from the CPU+GPU model) which is supposed to
improve cooling by not having an additional chipset to heat up. I've inspected the heatsink myself and I wonder
if its possible to improve it by maybe adding an extra copper pipe or anything without having to invasively tear out any
components to add new extra fans or anything.

Has anyone ever accomplished anything like it?

Do you use the dGPU heatsink as-is? I've read some posts where the CPU and GPU heatpipes were "bridged" by wrapping them together with copper foil tape. The posts claim a reduction in CPU temps as a result.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch

I MITM by myself to ask: i got an i7 4800mq that gets very hot, especially in the dock, which is for the most of the time. Do you advise to change the IHS to the dGPU one?

I tried a T430 DGPU Toshiba heatsink in a T420 with 45W quad and the result was no thermal improvement over regular T420 iGPU heatsink, ergo no performance improvement. I believe the suggestions to use DGPU heatsink in laptops without GPUs are misguided (exception being T520/30 which deliberately hamstring the IGPU-only poverty heatsink). I refuse to use the fan in disengaged mode, the increase in noise and wear is not worth it to me.

I understand the 14" laptops can only reasonably be expected to cool the 35/37W CPUs. I would suggest upgrading to a 37W quad.

You should modify the dock air vents on the left side, to improve airflow there.

Did you try it out and find any improvement?

I'm currently using a i7-4800MQ.

Do you know any tutorials for that? Thanks.
I sure am using a docking station and I do see the big stub with the power and release buttons obstruct the laptops left-side vents.

4800mq is a 47w chip, too hot.
