Rebop's W530 Questions Topic - New Owner

#1 Post by rebop » Thu Dec 06, 2012 10:41 pm

Hi folks,

Just got my fourth Lenovo replacing a T61 and moving to Win 7 64bit finally. Unboxed a few minutes ago and starting the process of getting everything configured and up and running.

I have successfully connect to my wireless network, but have no Internet access. I'm sure its something I have done dozens of times before, but in the moment of starting to setup, I can't figure out why. Any tips for where to look?

And second, for now :), I only saw two programs of bloatware being Norton 30 day trial and a cloud service. Did I miss any that I should scrub before going too much further?

I'm sure I will have a few more questions and appreciate your help.

I have Internet. It could not find a DNS server. Found it by pinging IP addresses that worked, but urls did not.

More to come, I am sure :)

OK, now I can really use some help.

1. Windows Updates found maybe 60 updates. It fails to install 52 of them. I have tried numerous times. Any idea what this fix is?

2. I have a T410 sitting next to this W530. On wireless, the T410 connects at 54 mbps but the W530 only 5.5 tops, and sometimes as low as 2. Why would that be? Missing a setting? I tied disabling N mode and no change.

Appreciate any help.

OK, don;t know why, but I decided to try a dozen updates at a time in case I could isolate one that was failing. All 63 now installed flawlessly. Go figure.

Maybe this will turn out to be something that can help another newbie:

As to updates also cannot find out how to tell Windows Update to check once a week rather than once a day. Looking for that and off to solve the slow wireless connection. That is really poor right now.

Hmm, did I post in the forum? Not getting a lot of interaction here...

At any rate, change to a different router and now getting 130mb so that is good to go. Would be nice to know why the other router had issues with this laptop and not my T410 Win 7 machine. That will nag at me.

Cleaning out crapware this afternoon. Even though ordering online gives you a choice of trials for Office and Symantec, etc, and I checked "none", they are there anyway. So trying to get clean before I start installing anything. And then checking what all the dozens and dozens of scheduled tasks are and disabling what is not needed. Did not need to stop any services. But its a nice feeling when it is all clean and ready to go to start installing and too much work thanks to all the updates and add / removes.

More I am sure, to come...

I certainly get rid of Norton, and I have had better luck when I completly remove it. Search online for "completely remove symantec anti-virus". There are a couple of things for notifications about special offers that I also remove. It defaults for doing rescue-and-recovery backups once a week. You may prefer no schedule or a different schedule.

STILL removing junk. There is so much. How many DVD players do we really need?

Next question, RAM:

How can I tell what RAM, not how much, is installed, especially as concerns voltage? Crucial says both 1.35 V and 1.5 V work in this, but I would like to match rather than mix and would like to avoid removing the keyboard if possible.

I like to use a free program called CPU-Z. It will tell you a lot about your RAM like the manufacturer, model number, serial number, which week of what year it was made, speeds, and voltages. Once you get the program installed, check the "SPD" tab.

Thanks, I will check it out.

Latest issue :)

There are programs in the notification area that have been deleted. I tried removing the reg keys as another site recommended and they always come back. Searching for them on c: finds nothing. Or in the registry. For example, ccsvshst.exe from the Norton installed I never wanted or asked for.

Solution?

Maybe Norton Removal Tool can help with that? http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Remova ... d4749.html

Thanks, but that is only one of several and there is nothing left of Norton or Symantec on this system. This does not even seem to exist, but it does show in the notification tray. Go figure.

Best way to get rid of all the nonsense is to reinstall the OS yourself.

Also: There is another section of the forum dedicated to the W530
W520
T61
