My new W530

#1 Post by Tim-ANC » Thu Dec 27, 2012 2:21 pm

End of year 20% off sale at lenovo.com. Arrived yesterday:

Intel Core i7-3820QM Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.70 GHz)
Windows 8 Pro 64
15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) LED Backlit AntiGlare Display, Mobile Broadband Ready
NVIDIA Quadro K1000M Graphics with 2GB DDR3 Memory
16 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (4 DIMM)
UltraNav with Fingerprint Reader
180GB Solid State Drive, SATA3
DVD Recordable 8x Max, Dual Layer, Ultrabay Enhanced w/ SW Royalty for Windows 8
9 Cell Li-Ion TWL 70++
Bluetooth 4.0 with Antenna
Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN
Mobile Broadband upgradable
1 Year Depot/Express Warranty

The keyboard is not as bad as I suspected. It'll grow on me. Haven't put it through its paces yet. Have Office 10 to load. First time with Win 8 and as with all new windows, I think its goofy. Good thing I remember all the old keyboard commands like Alt-F4 and Alt-tab. Getting Skype started is annoying. Demands that I link to my outlook.com account. Will have to find a way around that.

For Skype need to download the desktop version then you can use your Skype login. The one win8 pushes is the tablet version.

Why is Lenovo's software so intrusive? I want windows to control my network devices and bluetooth. Always seems to be a conflict with Lenovo's control and I never remember how to disable them.

Did you buy the RAM and SSD from Lenovo?

I ordered a similar system, FHD W530 and I bought 32GB RAM and a 128GB M4 SSD on Newegg and Amazon and saved *hundreds* of dollars.
1GHz PIII, 256MB, NVIDIA MX440, HD, 98SE
Dell Latitude E7440, i5, 8GB, Intel HD4400, 256GB SSD, 7
i7 6700K, 32GB, NVIDIA GTX 745, 256GB M.2 SSD + HD, 10

Is the sale still on? Do you have a link? Frankly, I find it extremely difficult to navigate the sales on the Thinkpad website. I can find only 12% discounts on W-series thinkpads.

=======================
Lots of thinkpads (10+) but I would never be so stupid as to list them all because that would spam everybody's searches and people who *do* try to list them all would be jerks.

No looks like the sale is down to 12%. I had a different coupon code: BIGSAVINGS. Not sure if it still works.

How do you like it. I'm not very comfortable with win8 and seems to be a lot of bloatware. Got 52GB on the drive and I can only account for 30 of hit. Think I'll try a clean install if I can figure how to do with out having disks.
