Lenovo Thinkpad L540, Ram confusion?

So I read some places that Lenovo Thinkpad L540 can use ordinary DDR3 1.5V ram modules.

Can anyone confirm this?

I know it normally uses DDR3L 1.35V because that is what's inside right now.

If true, is it because the 1.5V modules downgrade themselves to 1.35V or do they stay on 1.5V and just use more battery?

If I remember correctly, with my T440P and L440, they fail to post with 1.5v ram. For the better tbh, as this would put more strain on the IMC.
