I had no luck getting this to work as this renders cloned drive unbootable on any older thinkpads like T42, R52. I have ultrabay PATA to SATA bridge to store cloned windows on second drive.
What clone software works for this? I had no problem doing this with newer machines using all SATA system.
I wanted to try out 3 drives, one 2 platter 4 heads 100GB 7200rpm, 2 platter 4 heads 160GB 5400rpm and finally Samsung HM160HC to rate their performance.

In a machine as old as a T42 you'll have to clone from Ultrabay to HD-bay, NOT the other way around!
Which means that the "receiving" HD-bay drive will have to be a PATA drive, OR an mSATA on a PATA-mSATA-adapter.
Alternatively, I use Acronis TrueImage 2012 on my desktop, with which I have taken images from drives via Apricorn (PATA + SATA) or Sabrent (SATA only) adapters. I can then restore the image on another PATA drive using the Apricorn.

Still NOT a great day for a Guinness! (the Real Black Stuff).

For XP I used Norton Ghost 2003 which was basic but just worked. I made up a boot usb and the 1 MB program was activated through DOS. It actually fitted on to a HD 3.5 floppy.

Re: Cloning XP on PATA drives in T42.
USB too slow and I'm leery of them since I had one die and killed two drives.
I use USB external box for data shuffling. For cloning I use eSATA cable or ultrabay adapter. This time I used PATA to SATA ultrabay adapter for T42-R52 series and AOMEI backupper while in XP. No issues. On this T42, Went from 100GB hitachi PATA (in the notebook's) to 120GB SATA toshiba in ultrabay, then back to a Samsung 160GB HM160HC in the notebook's HD bay. I can boot in any of these drives in both bays. Finally.
