Battery Maximizer - how to allow it to work in Limited Acct.

#1 Post by K. Eng » Sun Apr 25, 2004 1:08 pm

I'm using Battery Maximizer 1.36a in my ThinkPad's Windows XP Professional install.

Coming from a paranoid Unix/Linux background, I don't like to use a Windows XP Admin account for day to day tasks (never run in root), so I've created a "standard user" account with limited access rights.

However, under this account, I am unable to set any of the power management features. When I click on the Battery Icon on the taskbar to get power management options, all my choices are "greyed out" and unselectable. If I try to change the settings in the control panel, I get an "unable to set power management" dialog box.

Any ideas on what causes this and how to change it?

Thanks in advance :)

Here's the only workaround I can find:

Suppose you have an Admin Account A and a Limited Account B.

Log into A and use A's permissions to change B into an Admin account as well. Log into B and make desired Battery Maximizer setting changes. Log back into A and change B back to a Limited Account.

B will now be a limited account with the power settings you want. The downside of this is that it is a minor pain to change the settings. This appears to be a Windows XP limitation and not a Battery Maximizer one.

If anyone has a more convenient solution let me know.

You could try using "Run As" to run the BMM as admin - it might or might not work.

When logged in as the limited user use the Start/Programs menu to locate the BMM and shift+right click the icon. Select Run as... and run it as Admin.
