Install XP Cd with product key on thinkpad?
Install XP Cd with product key on thinkpad?
Hi,
I am trying to install XP Pro from a CD i have using the product key on my thinkpad.
Trouble is it does not take the key.
I understand the PID value in setupp.ini on the CD in i386 folder must be modified.
Problem is i have tried the OEM, retail and VULP with no success.
Anyone have any ideas, perhaps someone with a recovery disc could find the PID value for me?
Regards,
Joshua Smith

I had the same problem when I was trying to install my old WinXP on my TP with the TP Serial Number. What I did was that I copied my old XP CD onto my HD and replaced the i386 folder with the i386 folder that came the the TP (preinstalled on c:\). I created a new bootable CD and it worked. Hope that solves your problem.
I reinstalled WinXP on my T42 using the key from the bottom. Here is a thread that talks about creating a bootable CD using the i386 folder from the C: that is preinstalled.

If you've already erased the i386 folder from your computer or you've reformatted, here is a link that talks about editing a WinXP cd you already have to accept the OEM key from the bottom.

Haven't tried that, but looks pretty straight forward.
Hope that helps.

xp install...
is the above advcie also intended to work when changing the OS from win2k (original which came with the machine) to a retail/OEM XP, or only when the original OS was also XP?
Has anyone done a fresh installation with the i386 folder? Is a new product activation required?
I installed a fresh XP from a bootable CD made from the i386 on a Virtual machine and the installed WinXP asked for a new product activation. I even copied the wpa.dbl from my activated XP on my TP but it still requires activation.
Any ideas?

If you use the PID from the i386/unattend.txt file no activation is required. Of course using a virtual machine like Vmware requires activation because some hardware is just simulated. You must install XP on a real harddisk.Bluecamp wrote:Has anyone done a fresh installation with the i386 folder? Is a new product activation required?
