Two Vista Updates from Microsoft Aug 7

Zero problems. Moving files, both locally and over the net, seems much faster, in some cases much, much faster. Other things seem speedier, too.

Do you know why these updates do not show up in Windows Update? I'm reluctant to install anything that does not show up in Windows Update.

I installed both the patches last night. Windows Explorer style Copy and Paste is a little faster, but still takes twice as long as Vista's Robocopy to get a job done.

No crashes, no other problems with the patches.

But...it's still Vista. That means the same oinker just with a fresh coat of lipstick.

Meantime, it's been announced by Mary Jane Foley over at ZDNet that there's a XP SP3 on the way also! All the more reason to stick with XP and have fewer annoyances than with Vista.

dfumento, these will likely show up Tues. on windows update. But if you follow the above links you will see that they are standalone updates and plenty of info on the MS site about them.

Meantime, it's been announced by Mary Jane Foley over at ZDNet that there's a XP SP3 on the way also!

Just a shout of thanks to jgrobertson for the links. I loaded them on my laptop-T42 after upgrading from vista- business to vista ultra. The updates has made my laptop come alive.
Note: I remove the aero-glass, I left the toolbar color. The laptop is set for performance. It does work well with the aero, I just don't want it.

After I installed the two updates, the middle scroll button (used in conjunction with the trackpoint) no longer works. At least after I've done wake up from sleep state. Anyone else having this trouble?

The updates have interfered with docking and undocking from an advanced dock (T60p). Usually requires one or two reboots to get back to normal.

After two days with the updates:

In general it performs noticeably better. A definite step in the right direction and raises my confidence level in Vista a bit. My reliability index went up to 1.51 from a low of 1.07 (out of 10).

I did have to reinstall Access Connections after the updates but now works better than before. I use that with the built in Verizon EVDO WAN card as well as wired and WIFI connections.

I run AVAST antivirus and use the Windows firewall with Defender turned on. Norton 360 and Internet Security 2007 were both disasters on Vista for me. Had to reformat and reinstall Vista after Norton.

I had a blue screen when viewing archived *.pst files with Outlook 2007 (no mail account set up).

I had a blank screen last evening when I got home and opened it up. It had not gone into sleep when I left work but stayed active and then when I docked it at home, it was hot, fan running but no screen. Had to force it to power down.

The problem with the daily crash due to HP Officejet printer driver (when not connected to the printer) continues (HP has not responded to my emails about this).

The DVD burner still stalls half way through forcing a power down reboot to get going again. This while using the built in DVD burning capability from MS. I had Roxio installed before the updates and it would burn DVDs ok then, but Roxio causes a LOT of stability problems so I uninstalled it (before the updates). (PC Doctor stalls on the DVD test too but it reports "passed."

On the positive side, the problems printing to Adobe Acrobat 8.1 Distiller went away. The problems with Quickbooks crashing went away. However I did run the repair on both Adobe and Quickbooks to make that happen. I have not had MS Word 2007 or Visio 2007 crash since the update either (I have the bluetooth add in turned off in Visio).

I had to do a system restore because often when waking up from sleep it would not recognize my Verizon Wireless AC595 PC Card Modem.

I downloaded and installed both Vista updates. I am not sure if I can tell if there are any performance or reliability enhancements.

However, I lost two tiles from Vista's Mobility Center. The 'Brightness' and 'Wireless' tiles are gone. Also, undocking from the Mini Dock is now causing problems. The LCD screen will not switch on. I have to use the the FN 4 key to put the Vista OS to sleep and then reawaken the laptop.

What a major hassle. If I could do it over, I would stay away from these updates.

huh? you had brightness setting in your mobility center? Wow... i've never seen that on any laptop and my Thinkpad T42 doesn't have it either. What drivers were you using? My wireless thing is there still (i don't use the IBM Hotkey thingy)

Now with 10 day experience with the updates, I can report this:

Reliability index increased from 1.07 to 3.86.
In general it is much more reliable.

Still having problems with dock and undock
Still having problems getting out of sleep.
Had to reinstall printer drivers and run the repair on Adobe and Office
The Explorer still crashes under some circumstances.

Interesting updates. While I've experienced the long "copy & paste" issue with large files, the others have not appeared on my x86 Vista Business install. I think I'll pass for right now, as my Reliability has been around 7.75 (out of 10).
Vista has been by far, more stable than XP SP2 was on my T43.

While I'm not experiencing any trouble, SP1 for Vista will be a welcomed addition; unless Microsoft really screws it up! (hey, they've done it before!)

Since some have a lot of issues and others, not so much, could you share what applications you are running typcially? Maybe that would help to clarify what the issues are.

Of course, I am running 64 bit and that alone might be the big part of the difference.

The copy issue still exists especially when copying large files over the network. At this time Robocopy seems to do it's thing better than windows explorer, and faster!

Additional update on the impact of these updates.

My Stability Index is now 5.97 and that has improved from 1.07 when I installed the updates. It was 7.17 on initial install.

Since then two or three other updates from MS have been installed and several drivers from Lenovo as well.

I am on vacation so not running all the applications that I was and that no-doubt reduces the opportunities for crashes in-turn leading to improved index numbers.
