Network sharing in Vista

#1 Post by sktn77a » Thu Nov 26, 2009 1:13 pm

Hello:

I have several computers in my home network conencted via a Netgear 10/100 ethernet. Operating systems are Vista home premium 64 Vista home premium 32 and Vista business 34. I can see secondary hard disk drives from one computer on the other computer, but not the primary drives (C: drives) - says I don't have authorization. How can I get read access to the C crives so that I can transfer files between computers (the C: drives are all shared but it doesn't seem to make a difference)?

Thanks
Keith

Is the share of the C drive with permission for “full control” (Share->Advanced Sharing->Permissions->”full control”, “change” and “read” all selected)? When you try to access the C drive share are you asked for a password?

Yes, everything is shared as you say (read access but not write or modify). The error I get when acessing the Vista 32 machine from the Vista6 4 machine is: "Drive is available but the account you logged on with was denied access".

The error I get accessing the Vista 64 machine from the Vista 32 machine is: "enter username and password".

I don't have OS passwords on either machine and have administrator accounts on both. All drives are shared with read access.

In the Network and Sharing Center (Control Panel->Network and Sharing Center), under “Sharing and Discovery” are “Network Discovery”, “File Sharing” and “Public File Sharing” marked “On” while “Password Protected Sharing” is marked “Off”?

I’ve found that unless the above settings agree with the settings under “Share” in the shared folder “sharing” doesn’t always work.

(It's odd I'm the only one who's replied to this)

Thanks: In digging deeper, the public folder sharing option was password protected on the 64 bit machine (they really hide that one deep in the bowles if network connections). I can now access everything on both computers except the C: drive (I get the same error message on both now when I try to access it the C drives: "Drive is available but the account you logged on with was denied access").

Vista is driving me nuts!

The easiest solutions probably are sharing the folders on C you want to access or transferring the files to the public folder and then moving them where you want them. I’ve never tried to share an entire C drive so I can’t say whether it’s even possible. I do have folders other than the public and/or my docs folders on C shared so I know that works.

You’re right there are a lot of things hidden or really hard to find in Vista. I started using it in January and wasn’t thrilled but now that I’ve got it set up for my usage I like it more than XP.
