Networking 2000 and XP

#1 Post by thinkpad1 » Sat Dec 26, 2009 3:54 pm

Does anyone know how to do this?

I don't know where to ask.

I want to grant full access to both computers, one has 2000 and one has XP.

But, nothing I do works. I thought this was easy. I don't like any of the 'how to's' I've visited and read. They are poorly presented and make it seem like two or three steps and it just works!

I haven't looked at 2000 in years and it's just as bad as it was before.

I have a workgroup called 'WORKGROUP' for both and each computer has a name. But, nothing is shared and nothing other than the current computer is in the 'network neighbourhood.' I'm trying to get two computers networked, for now.

What am I doing wrong? :? :(

Plain hardwired, you could just use a crossover network cable between the 2 PCs.
Using a router, they must both be hardwired or wifi connected to that router/network.
Next, activate File Sharing on both computers.
And on both PCs NETBIOS over TCP/IP must also be enabled for normal network browsing
If you forget about the college-blahblah, here's how to do it: http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/File ... n2kxp.html

Thanks for that link. I can share certain files but having trouble allowing access/permissions to other folders, mostly the main 'folder' ('D' for example). The drive's been partitioned so there is a 'C' and 'D.'

I didn't know if this was the best way but.... I was going to buy an adapter since there were two older computers connected via kvm switch but it was connected via VGA cables. The newer computer has DVI so I need an adapter.

But, for now, I was trying to network the computers.

My other problem is providing access to bookmarks on the other computer. A profile wasn't used so now I am looking into how to provide access to the bookmarks.

Any easy way to do this?

I didn't want to 'send' (import?) the bookmarks over. It just needs to offer temporary access. Oh well, I'll probably go back to the kvm method once I get an adapter. I checked big box stores and it's over $20! Ebay? Three dollars!

With XP, you normally have to allow file sharing for each drive/folder. From a Windows Explorer view, right-click the drive/folder and select the Sharing option.

As far as the web brower(s) bookmarks are concerned, you can usually export them to an HTML file and then just open it up with a browser. They will NOT be merged with any of the existing bookmarks.

Thanks for the info! I did the sharing part. I haven't tried the bookmarks move yet.

One problem I had was having a network while one computer was connected via wireless. So I had to plug one computer with an ethernet cable. That kind of defeats the purpose in a way but I wanted to get the two computers networked for now and revisit that issue at a later time...
