P1 gen 3 won't boot from Sabrent Rocket Q 8TB SSD.

Hi all!

Plugging in a Sabrent Rocket Q 8TB 22x80mm M.2 NVMe SSD to the Thinkpad P1 gen 3 (= a 2020 model) gave me bizarre behaviors -

Sometimes the drive is not detected at all neither by BIOS/boot firmware nor by operating system.

Sometimes the drive is detected by the operating system and the boot process, but eventually registers as PCI-device detached.

And finally, I cannot get the laptop to boot off the SSD at all.



Curiously, this same SSD does work to boot from the older Thinkpad X1 Yoga gen 2 which is a 2017 model.

Looking at Lenovo's documentation, I notice that

(1) the laptop has been sold with 4TB SSD as boot media (e.g. here https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/th ... 2WS2P1P1N3 ), so definitely there is no 2TB cap and

(2) Lenovo's spec page for the laptop https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PD ... 3_Spec.pdf says "max 2TB" (see page 3 under "Storage") which evidently is not correct as the laptop itself is sold with 4TB SSD:s.

A peculiar documentation glitch indeed and especially considering that it is their flagship & highest-end laptop of 2020.



I am asking myself if the Sabrent Rocket Q has particular electrical properties e.g. too high watt consumption, that the P1 is sensitive to?

Kindly confirm that 8TB NVMe SSD is actually supported as boot media on the P1 gen 3 (as it is on the much older X1 Yoga gen 2) e.g. and I should RMA the SSD and ideally update the SSD to another model.
