P14s Losing Power When OFF
P14s Losing Power When OFF
My Thinkpad P14s seems to be losing power when switched off and I don't know why ?!?!
In the bios I have disabled the powered usb ports, enabled Linux power management and always shut down the laptop when not using my Ubuntu 22.04 install with 6.x kernels.
Does anyone know why this may be happening ? If I turn off at 80% it sits around 65% the next morning.

Re: P14s Losing Power When OFF
Mine does the same. In fact, it's becoming an issue to store all the laptops I have. Next time I pull them out, they are already out of charge. It doesn't happen with my older Thinkpads, specially the ones with round cell batteries.
I suspect it's multiple things:
* More stringent battery safety measures. No matter how little energy it takes, to keep monitoring the cell voltage and temperature it's going to drain it.
* The system relies on the main battery to keep the configuration (less reliance on coin cell batteries).
I've been unable to determine what causes it. I might as well sell my excess inventory due to that.
However, it's probably more common among AMD machines.

Re: P14s Losing Power When OFF
Thinkpads were the be all and end all of business laptops because they were so sturdy and just worked well, but this is showing a new face if they will be plagued with battery issues from here on in. I've opened a ticket with Lenovo themselves to see what's causing the issue and their helpdesk borked my install already by asking to reset the bios changing the efi and causing my Os to freak out and not boot.
Re: P14s Losing Power When OFF
I may have found a strange solution to this issue, by going into suspend or turning off laptop, then going back into desktop and shutting down, it seems to switch it off properly so that no battery drain is caused. Works 8/10 times.

Sounds to me like Fast Boot is effing up batteries royally.

Re: P14s Losing Power When OFF
Fast boot isnt enabled, but after some trial and error I found it to be the monitor setting in the bios. Booting from external monitor doesn't shut down laptop entirely and results in the battery drain, but booting from internal panel and using Os to switch to external display fixes it, especially when you shut down and dont turn off external panel first.

Re: P14s Losing Power When OFF
Now that's an unusual cause of the problem. Is the monitor connected via HDMI or USB-C?

Re: P14s Losing Power When OFF
I'm using HDMI, but it seems the bios tends to think it's still connected when booting to external screen. I've let Lenovo techs know about the issue and hopefully a bios fix will be issued soon enough.
