Thinkpad P1 Gen 7 4TB Memory Recommendation

#1 Post by rwelch22 » Fri Jul 04, 2025 2:38 pm

Just ordered a P1 Gen7 2024 edition. It comes with 2 TB. Desired is to upgraded to 2x 4TB.

Question: Would the WD_BLACK 4TB SN850X NVMe work in the P1 Gen7 ?? Is this double sided or single sided? Spec do not indicate.

Specifications indicate that supported are:
M.2 2280 SSD PCIe® NVMe®, PCIe® 4.0 x4 Performance 512GB / 1TB / 2TB / 4TB

https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PD ... 7_Spec.pdf

Installation states that the 4TB, at least that which Lenovo sells, is double sided.
https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/prod ... placements

"Before you replace an M.2 solid-state drive, ensure you use the proper thermal pad in the spaces indicated in this diagram. For single-sided M.2 solid-state drives, use a thermal pad with a thickness of 2.25mm. For dual-sided M.2 solid-stated drives, use a thermal pad with a thickness of 0.75mm"

Of course the Lenovo 4TB seems unreasonably expensive at ~$2,000 USD.

Reddit research is is unclear.

Thus.... asking the experts. (Yes, new to the group. Just recently found.)
Next up... which cooling "pad" is best for an Thinkpad P1 Gen2... my workhorse. :)

"Memory IS Ram!!" :D

Like you, I would min out the build from the factory unless you need WWAN cos, they won't probs include the antennas otherwise. But yes, the old Thinkpad factory tax is a thing.

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/wd ... k-in-black say's the SN850X is singlesided. Those PCIe 4.0 drives sure need some heatsinking.

I always thought those vertical holders a were cool idea (aah pun) for desktop use in regards to extra cooling for your p1g2
