I'm not exactly sure what you are doing here, regarding pc7 but im intrigued. Can you give me a bit of context as to what you are doing and how you made the laptop silent?mdancer wrote:Yep, I've got pc7 as well now. The nice thing about having pc7 is that the laptop is absolutely silent now

Looks like PC7 works in windows as well.
You have to update the Realtek GBe driver as the one built into Windows won't allow the PC7 state. I went with the latest from Realtek:
http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downlo ... Down=false
I also followed harryK's steps for BIOS settings:

Unfortunately the PC is not silent. Fan still turns on. However i need to update my BIOS to the latest and see if it differs.I enabled Aggressive LPM and DEVSLP in the BIOS (I used shorter intervals than the default), and activated SATA min_power in TLP.

Re: X62 problems, quirks, and fixes
Hi folks!
I'm asking for assistance.
I'm trying to install a WLAN and a WWAN card into X62. So the idea is to have them both. However the WLAN card is not working
in the upper slot and the WWAN card is also not working in that slot. They are working in the bottom slot though...
So.. Any idea?

it seems the upper slot is for msata only. I couldn't get any WWAN or WLAN to work from it.whitelabel wrote:Hi folks!

Dammit! What a huge disappointment! I really thought that I can have them both..
Looks like there is no X62 for me anymore.

unless there is some trick / mod to get the card to work.
My T420/W520 can accept either a msata or WWAN in the second slot.
I didn't deep-dive into the Bios when I tested and failed to get it working. There may be some kind of toggle.

My W520/X220 is also working fine with this pair, but it seems like our Chinese colleagues did not implemented this feature.
What a waste! This mobo is gorgeous. And with a LED mod from Monty this laptop turns into a small and powerful beast.

With the spare internal USB port, you can probably fit one of those WWAN-Adapter things next to the sound board and have both.
Seems to lack a 2nd true mPCIe lane though, which is sad.

Which screen panel are you using the LED mod on? (XGA? SXGA+ IPS? SXGA+-from-tablet? or panel provided with X62?) I just got 2 LED mod kits shipped from Monty.whitelabel wrote:dmdsoftware wrote:

Re: X62 problems, quirks, and fixes
I wish more motherboards had internal USB. On a particular ultrabook, I ripped out the keyboard and replaced it with a Thinkpad keyboard + usb converter, but I had to wire it to one of the external USB ports. Would have been an ideal mod had it been to an internal connector.flyingfishfinger wrote:With the spare internal USB port, you can probably fit one of those WWAN-Adapter things next to the sound board and have both.

Re: X62 problems, quirks, and fixes
I'm using SXGA -100 panel which was upgraded with the daylight kit from Monty. Can go working on a direct sunlight. No problem with it.
Funny thing, but I'm not able to use my WWAN modem in the bottom slot. I just got some cheap SIM card holder with a bus line which should
be connected to the mpcie slot simultaneously with the modem. And no SIM is found...

Re: X62 problems, quirks, and fixes
I've got a combination BT + Wifi working fine, meaning that the PCIe lane and USB both seem to be wired through correctly. AFAIK the WWAN cards tend to be USB, so they should work...
In other news, I'm running an Apple Cinema over miniDP at 2560x1440 right now and it works great, no issues

Hi everybody!
I just got some interesting information from Jacky. He's always helpful. And I hope that I can share it with you.
He said that there's an internal USB port. Check this pic: http://funkyimg.com/i/2rAUn.png (Size: 1.31 MB)
I'm thinking about this option. Seems like I can solder my mini pcie-to-usb wwan converter to this internal port.
And hide this thingy inside the laptop.

As I said
In fact, it's the same plug that the fingerprint reader in the X61t lid uses, it was just discussed over on the German forum where someone used it to hide a small internal hub / mouse transmitter

Re: X62 problems, quirks, and fixes
Hey hey!
Just wanted to let you know that it's absolutely possible to fix the upper mini pcie slot (MSATA) by manually
providing it with some pins from the internal usb port. I've asked my friend to help me with this task. And he succeeded. 2 hours work.
Right now my upper mpcie slot has the LTE-A modem (with the SIM holder) in it. Glorious thing.
No need to find the place to hide that monstrous USB-to-MiniPCIE converter.

Yes, you only need D- and D+ from that internal USB port.
As for the mini pcie slot pinout assignment - it has the standard pinout, just google it.
And here's the pinout for the internal USB port: 5V/D-/D+/GND with GND being the closest to the fan connector.
Also you might face some strange problem when the modem is still not recognized by the OS. In that case you can ask me
and I'll provide you with my BIOS settings. I'm just not sure about the reason of this issue. And I hope you won't face it and
your modem will be working without any additional steps.

Re: X62 problems, quirks, and fixes
To Whitelabel: Thanks for your instructions. I have succeeded installing a MC7710 into the mSata slot.
I would never have attempted or even come by this idea if not for your pioneering.
Do you know the speed of the internal USB? I read somewhere that your MC7455 needs USB 3 to reach the CAT6 speeds.
I thought about installing a Jack for an external antenna to get better coverage. I think the WWAN antenna on X61 was only for 3G.
I also instlled a second WWAN antenna from X201 into the left palmrest. I didn't notice any performance improvent.
I am in a bad covered area, and my Huawei P9 is consisently reaching higher speeds.

Hey! That's good news! Glad I could help
I don't have any info regarding the speed of that port. Should probably ask Jacky about this when I have a chance.
I did some quick downloads during the period of testing and I got (most of the time) ~10MB/sec with this modem on the LTE-A connection.
However our Moscow cellular networks are overloaded and I don't know how to reach CAT6 speeds..
Probably this is a chance to try some link aggregation technics..
I was thinking about replacing/upgrading the hardware part of the WWAN subsystem (cables, antenna), but I'm still thinking.

FYI, user "mifritscher" over in the German forum has dumped and disassembled the EC. You can read about it on his wiki page here.
Maybe this will help us get our hands on fan control and various other stuff, I'm curious to see what he comes up with...
Cheers!

Hio
Yes, I'm playing a bit with the EC's firmware I hope that I get some further insights. Yesterday I compared some versions and identified the main algorithm for the fan (I hope). Theoretically I should be able to put the old algorithm in the new firmware, but to do this I'll need some more boldness *g*
I've built 2 x62t, which are working nice. One little problem is that one board is a bit unstable if I use both DIMM-slots - e.g. hard hang on memcheck86+ on 21%. Single channel works flawlessly - tried both modules, both slots. I'm using 2x4GB DDR3 (no L), which are working in the other x62t yust fine.
The biggest missing thing so far was the lack of the PXE firmware for the network card... The bios seems to have the functionality, its just the ROM option which is missing. http://www.realtek.com.tw/Downloads/dow ... &PNid=13#3 has some UEFI UNDI drivers and PXE code

Re: X62 problems, quirks, and fixes
I hope you have a way to hard flash your motherboard in the worst case scenario.
Even if you tweak the fan behavior through the BIOS, there will never be a way to control the fan through any kind of OS, due to lack of sensors, correct? I know that there is a relatively easy method to flash a custom image on the splash screen; if you find out how to tweak the fan software do you think it will be possible for end users, that are not afraid of playing with BIOS firmware (like me), to set our own fan behavior?

Re: X62 problems, quirks, and fixes
There is a known interface to interact with the ec, which e.g. https://github.com/hirschmann/nbfc/wiki/EC-probing-tool uses. Works also under linux (albeit the need to compile yourself). Reading give some meaningful results (e.g. one temperature and some power stats), writing is also possible with this interface (albeit the EC firmware seems to ignore writes). And even if not: the EC has direct access to the keyboard matrix - so as a last resort some "magic key combos" can be used
Regarding sensors: The CPU has some sensors, also most HDDs/SSDs and some WLAN cards can measure temperatures. I think that even only the CPU sensors alone are enough.
The firmware for the EC resides on U19 (bottom side), which can be written with a simple SPU programmer (or AVR/rasberry/...)
The "main BIOS firmware" is another kind of beast and resides on U2

Hey mifritscher,
glad to have you onboard!
Could you describe this X62T, please? Does the touch-function (pen/finger) work as intended?
I suppose there's no point in building X62T only for the chassis.
Thanks!

In the german forum, el-sahef did the first x62t of I know. You can see it here: https://thinkpad-forum.de/threads/20254 ... ost2045818 . For the most things I used his ideas/ways.
The main mods are the leds (further wires needed), the wacom+keys on the screen (2 avrs + hub needed) and the HDD bay (mod the little pcb or the bay itself)

Re: X62 problems, quirks, and fixes
I've got the problem that memcheck+ 5.01 hangs hard at 21/66% when I use 2x 4 GB DDR3 modules. Tried 3x2 different parts, 2 had 1333 MHz, 4 1600 MHz. And in 2 62 mobos. Single channel is working fine... Bios problem?
P.S. I used always the force smp option.

Re: X62 problems, quirks, and fixes
The SMP option of memtest86+ seems to be buggy. If you have errors or freezes with it try again in non-SMP mode.
I got a second 8 GB RAM module today and ran memtest86+ in non-SMP mode for two passes with no errors. In SMP-mode it freezed at some point.
