The $80 X240

#1 Post by Geartooth » Tue Oct 30, 2018 11:28 pm

After much haggling, I now own a X240. i5-4300U, 4GB of RAM ,a Samsung 128GB SSD and a 6-Cell at 89%: the fact it was only $80 made it a steal. So currently I'm thinking of doing the IPS 1080P (Which FRU Should I get?) a new Powerbridge battery because it currently is at 11% and a new Trackpad (Current one Creaks and is scratchy). The problem is I need to use GNOME because it is the only DE besides Budgie that disables Trackpad while keeping Touchpoint, and i have to wait till 11/11 to order the parts I need because it's effectively Chinese Cyber Monday, and I want to save some cash. Screen and Powerbridge should be easy- I'm scared about the Clunkpad, as I don't exactly want to buy a new palmrest, despite it currently not having a Fingerprint reader.

Get the 00HM745 LCD as used in the X250.
That's an LG LP125WF2-SPB2 non-touch FHD IPS.

The 00HM111 from the X240 has ghosting problems.
BEWARE: make ABSOLUTELY sure that you get a REAL 00HM745, because lots of sellers have FAKE 00HM745 stickers on a 00HM111 screen!

To check what you receive, you'll need to read out the EDID chip on the LCD (which will say 00HM111 or 00HM745 [or something else...]).

To replace the clunkpad, get the X250 Synaptics buttons plus touchpad (or X250 Alps if you only want the buttons and don't care about touchpad).
You'll need a Dremel to modify the touchpad opening in the palm rest.

And get the 72W battery, FRU 45N1737 or 45N1777

I don't need a new 72W, as the current 72W is at 89%. But yes, I'll try to make sure that I'll get the 00HM745, and being Chinese I'm thinking of getting one off Taobao, from a seller whom appears to ship legit Panels. How do I check EDID when it gets here? Also Great. Now I need to get a Dremel.

Note: You do not need a Dremel. I've gotten mine (Adhesive) X240 Palmrest to fit the -50 touchpad without any modding. The -50 touchpad is now attached with industrial Adhesive.

Dremel was not necessary for me either. Also was just adhesive.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.
