How to set fan speed always at max on a 600X

#1 Post by Azoro » Mon Jan 30, 2012 6:18 am

Hi, I'm using a 600X as a little web server, installed with Windows XP SP3.
I'd like to have the CPU fan running always at max speed (actually under XP is running pretty slow, while when I turn the 600X on it is going pretty well, so before you ask the fan is good :D ).
I tried with speedfan, TPfancontrol, but because of different controller the fan is not recognized. So i was thinking about a "hardware" solution: is it possible to the "inhibit" fan control wires, in order to have the fan running at max speed? And how?

Thanks a lot!

I have been unsuccessful in finding anything to control the fan for my 390X, which is a close relative to the 600X. They do, however, run Windows XP very smoothly. Make sure you disable any unnecessary services and autoruns.

What about a laptop cooling pad? Moving warm air away from the computer will help the heatsinks conduct more heat out of there.

Another note about the cooling: the air that the fan pulls through is designed to pull air in from the specific vents in the bottom so that it flows in across key components and chambers. Any cracks in the top cover, especially anywhere close to the fan, will leak air in. Be sure not to leave the battery bay and ultrabay empty so that air does not leak in through there. Make sure those areas are all sealed good, as I have found that makes a difference.

Thank you for your reply. Actually my 600X is running quite cool (it is in a sort of cellar... so I don't have any problem regarding noise... I just want to have it as much cool as possible, thus with fan always running at full speed.

Maybe I could just "tap" +5 and -5 from another place? Isn't there a way to "blind" the tachometer controller? The fan has got 4 wires, +5, -5 (?) and the other 2?

Goggling around I find this:

(scroll down to find 4-wire PC fan)
see also: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboar ... 012074.htm

It might be possible to disconnect the control (4th) wire and have the fan run at full speed. Haven't verified this with any of my own 600X system so YMMV.

Thanks for this piece of info. It had never occurred to me that it would be more efficient for the fan if I left something in the UltraBay rather than left it empty. I still use my CPU-upgraded 600X's periodically and sometimes run into over-heating issues with them. I'll keep this in mind in the future.
