$250 worth of upgrades?

i was given (for my Bar Mitzvah), by my uncle, a $250 gift certificate to NewEgg. Needless to say, it is an outstanding gift (thank god it wasn't a Bestbuy one...), but i have nothing to spend it on.

Right now i have a T40 2373-7CU upgraded to internal wireless and 768mb RAM. Any upgrades that would improve my "overall computing experience"

?

I am thinking of getting an external moniter... but i haven't commited myself to anything yet

How about a faster HD? 7k60 Hitachi, or may be you can wait for Seagate 7k100 HD.

that was my first thought... i am only using *checks* 4.9 gigs of my 37 gigs... and i am OK with my current speed.

I am thinking a new processor... but i am a bit unsure on if they are user-replacable. Any suggestions...?

Download the hardware maintenence manual from IBM's website. You shoud be able to find out in there whether the CPU is soldiered or socketed.

How about a nice set of speakers? Bose companion 3... $250 so that should cover it.

Second monitor could be nice too.

I don't think processor upgrade would be worth it.

If you tell us what you use your notebook for it might be easier to give you more ideas.

i do graphic design, some (not much) gaming, and word processing/internet

i am thinking towards either a PDA or a external moniter...

If you go for an external monitor and you also decide CRT, look at the Samsung SyncMaster 997DF. That monitor has gotta be the best 19" flat CRT $200.00 can buy. If you have the resolution settings at what the company reccomends (1600x1200x75hz), there is no eyestrain at all. Max resolution is 1920x1440. Color and contrast on that thing is better than any other monitor I've looked at.

If you look around in the Post Your Desktop thread, you'll see somewhere in there a picture of my desk with that same monitor sitting on it.

if you do graphics design, an external monitor would be the way to go. Preferrably a CRT since they get better color reproduction, contrast and such. I do have the monitor that AlphaKilo has mentioned. It is ver very nice, very sharp bright. I used it with my desktop before I began falling in love with TPs.
