Screwdriver to access RAM
Screwdriver to access RAM
I'm a college student looking to upgrade my RAM, but don't have a set of screwdrivers with which to remove the two screws. Could someone please tell me what type/size screwdriver fits the job? Thanks.

Re: Screwdriver to access RAM
Just buy one of those inexpensive computer toolkits like this one and a wrist strap. There's no point buying tools one screwdriver at a time. And there's no point in stripping the soft-metal screws that Lenovo uses, just because you used the wrong-sized screwdriver. Don't tighten them too tight.
Good luck!

Re: Screwdriver to access RAM
I use a screwdriver kit like this one on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-15-in-1-Scr ... 2c6760512c
It's only four bucks and works for 95% of my thinkpad screws.
On the rare occasion a torx screwdriver is required, this would probably work: http://www.ebay.com/itm/16-in-1-Torx-Sc ... 1c0bec8d46
But your ram cover shouldn't require a torx -- the first kit I listed will most likely have the screwdriver you need.
QFoam is exactly right -- those little screws are VERY easy to strip, and then you are struck with a project of removing the stripped screw and finding the correct size replacement -- so resist the temptation to keep trying to loosen the screw without the correct fitting screw driver --
If you don't want to wait for an online purchase, your local hobby store should have the same screwdriver kits.

You might not want to state that you're a college student
Most computer screws are PH2, but in current ThinkPads there is also a lot of PH1
Most of the few-dollar sets are junk. Fortunately they are often so cheap that the bits split in half before you can tighten anything too much.

Re: Screwdriver to access RAM
Bought this set back in college, about $25 and many, many thinkpads later, its still the only set Ive ever needed for screwdrivers. http://www.amazon.com/Wiha-26199-Slotte ... words=wiha . Ive since supplemented the kit with some torx, 1 at a time.
