Recovery onto smaller drive. Possible?

#1 Post by FragrantHead » Thu Oct 18, 2012 6:11 pm

My Thinkpad T520 came with a 320GB conventional disk. I burned the recovery DVDs and am trying to restore onto a 128GB SSD. It's Windows 7 Professional. The recovery is hanging at the file V:\FactoryRecovery\recovery.ini, which I assume is the target. The recovery partition is normally located at the end of the disk. Is it possible to restore onto a smaller drive or is the process maybe hanging because it's designed to only restore to a 320GB drive and trying to write beyond the end of the disk? Has anyone successfully restored a set of recovery disks of a similar generation onto a smaller than original drive?

Sorry, false alarm. Working the second time around. Must have hit the wrong key on a disk change or something.

I have used that very same set to restore W7 Pro onto a 60GB SATA HD, 60GB PATA HD and even a 32GB SATA SSD.
All of them went without a hitch.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
