GPU and Xrite Color Calibration Question

Can someone explain color on the W530 to me please?

First, it seems that it is using the Intel HD graphics rather than the Nvidia K1000 installed. How do I change that? Why would it default to the intel chip? Especially when on AC power?

Second, I have the Xrite built in color calibrator. There is also a Color Management control Panel app and Nvidia itself has color management.

How do the three of these interact?

And it seems that a successful calibration does not make any change that I can note. Should it be easily noticeable on this machine and panel. Must mention I think the panel is very good, btw, for anyone reading this.

And last, if I color calibrate when the Intel HD is active, does that calibrate the Nvidia as well?

I'm a bit confused.

Let me see if I can help clear some of this up for you!

First, it seems that it is using the Intel HD graphics rather than the Nvidia K1000 installed. How do I change that? Why would it default to the intel chip? Especially when on AC power?

Optimus (the software/hardware responsible for managing the switchable GFX in this laptop) has a continuously internet-updated list of programs (say, Photoshop, AutoCAD, etc...) that will tell the computer to use the K1000M GFX chip. You can also add applications to that list, if the program you want to run on the heavy chipset (ex. Lightroom) isn't in the NVidia-assembled list. To do this:

Open up Control Panel, and use the search bar to look for "NVidia Control Panel" and open that.

The program is split in a two-pane interface, with subsections entitled 3D settings, Display, Video, Workstation. If you want to add an app to the list of programs that run on the heavy-duty GFX card, expand 3D Settings-->Manage 3D settings...

Thanks for replying. I am aware of adding apps to the Nvidia. But unsure when I calibrate and the Intel is active if it affects the Nvidia profiles as well.

And I have been playing more with this today and found that in display properties changing my .icc profile among the three there - a default, the calibrated one from Xrite and one from another user on this forum, make NO changes at all. I must be doing something wrong.

Appreciate any insights.

IMO, in the NVidia control panel, under display-->adjust desktop color settings, it should say other applications control color settings (i.e. xRite)

I didn't mess with anything, and I get a properly calibrated display regardless of what GFX chip I am using.

But I also played with changing the .icc profiles from a forum user, and I did see a change. Perhaps your display was just very well calibrated from the factory!
