W520 Ultrabay 1TB Drive Not Recognized by Fresh Win7 Install

#1 Post by myxomop » Tue Jan 22, 2013 9:16 pm

LENOVO 42824YU
NVIDIA Quadro 2000M
Intel Core i7 2860QM @ 2.50GHz
8.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 664MHz
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1
BIOS Ver. 8BET57WW (1.37), 4/6/2012

Am attempting to hot swap my UltraBay caddy and 1TB Hitachi 2.5" drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822145584) from outgoing T510 into this machine. The LED on the side lights up, but neither Disk Management nor Device Manager show any trace of the drive.

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

First thing, does the bios recognize the drive? If so, then it's a driver issue.

Have you tried to swap the OS drive from the sata III port (assuming that's where your OS drive is) to the ultrabay?

I don't have a T510 here to try, but I am curious what is the FRU of the caddy. The reason I am asking is complicated. Something changed in the caddy design between the T400 machines and the T410 machines, so that a T410 caddy will work in a T400, but a T400 caddy will not work in a T410. I have no idea what the change was, because optical drives from a T400 WILL work in a T410. In most areas, T510 machines work just like T410 machines, but not all areas. I know my T520 will not work with a T400/T500 caddy, but it is possible your problem is the caddy

I have original Thinkpad Ultrabay, but I haven't 1TB HDD, I can't tell you is it caddy issue or laptop. Give me time to get 1TB HDD, I'll tell you.

Thats an awesome drive. Did you consider the 7200RPM version for $84 bucks? Have heard its SATA 3 and maybe not backward compatiable. Is that the reason you punted on it? Recognize this is a question when you are seeking answers but seems you would be knowledgeable as you maybe evaluated both 1TB HGST HDDs. Thanks in advance.

Wild guess: does the HDD have a password set?
Also, will the HDD be recognized after a cold boot, reboot, or coming out of hibernation?
