New w530, some issues

#1 Post by Seqteq » Thu Jan 24, 2013 10:00 pm

Hi everyone :D

I just picked up a new w530 primarily for VM work but it will probably be replacing my MacBook Pro for daily use as well. However I'm not new to Lenovo or IBM (or AMBRA for that matter). I've deployed scores of lenovos but this is the first one I've owned.

In windows 8 I get a lot of event 37 "processor speed being limited by firmware" I went and disabled all processor power management in windows power settings and in bios. BIOS didn't have any speed step settings, but I enabled the virtuallization options.

Another thing, the BIOS states there is no finger print reader attached even though I was playing around with it in Win7 before I loaded Win8

And yet another, I got the w530 configured with raid, and another issue I need to address is that sometimes (maybe every other boot) it hangs at the Intel RST RAID controller bios screen. I had RAID at the top of the boot order, a work around seems to be (not yet confidently confirmed) placing other boot devices higher in the boot order.

My BIOS settings are pretty stock with the exception of:
disabling AMT
turning on processor options
editing boot order

EDIT: and yes I did upgrade the BIOS, but I cannot find how to update the RST option rom

Not sure if it affects you but there are issues with the Intel RST driver being pushed by Lenovo (version 1207)

Also when on battery the processor drops to 1.2GHz - are you on mains or battery when it throttles?

OK, I'm a dope, SpeedStep was in bios and I had it enabled, processor messages gone from sys event log now.

However I still hang at the RST option rom screen.

As for the RST driver, I'm on 11.7.0.1013 -- from Intel's site, status: current released: 11/19/2012
EDIT: obviously option rom bios and windows driver don't match

Got lenovo to send me a replacement keyboard bezel to fix the fingerprint reader. QC man, QC.

Should be here about the same time as my second Samsung 840 Pro, you know for a stripped SSD RAID 8)

OK I have completely isolated the problem with pausing at the RST screen after BIOS

The problem was my Logitech Nano Receiver I use for wireless keyboard/mouse.

If the receiver was in my external USB hub (with power adapter), or the regular USB 2.0 port, it *sometimes* hung.

If the receiver was in the "Always on" usb port (the yellow one) it ALWAYS hung.

So I disabled "Always On USB" in BIOS and I can use the receiver in the yellow USB port, which is closest to my mouse allowing me to get longer battery life out of the mouse.

Not sure what exactly is going on behind the scenes (keyboard error reporting from BIOS? RST waiting for input? Aliens?)
But my problem is resolved.

Only thing left is the fingerprint reader, and Lenovo is replacing that.. I'm a happy camper!
