Mashup X40

#1 Post by pnck » Thu Apr 18, 2013 7:51 pm

Glad I found you guys!

I have three X40's, they accumulated. I checked them today in detail:

Code: Select all

ThinkPad X40 (2371-8NG): P M 1.2GHz LV, 512MB RAM, 40GB 4200rpm HDD, 12.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD,
    Intel Extreme, IBM 802.11a/b/g wireless(MPCI), Bluetooth/Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), Secure Chip,
8 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro
(gentoo)

ThinkPad X40 (2372-CU1): P M 1.2GHz LV, 512MB RAM, 40GB 4200rpm HDD, 12.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD,
    Intel Extreme, IBM 802.11 b/g wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), Secure Chip,
8 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro
(Based on 2372-8EU)(debian)

ThinkPad X40 (2371-79G): P M 1.2GHz LV, 512MB RAM, 40GB 4200rpm HDD, 12.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD,
    Intel Extreme, Intel 802.11 b wireless(MPCI), Bluetooth/Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), Secure Chip,
4 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro
(windows)

I had to mark them with the prevalent OS so I can distinguish them.

The gentoo box had a broken display although it was the first I bought and hands down the most expensive a few years ago (over 1k bucks). Since it seems to have a better wifi than the other two, the idea was to replace the windows machines display in place of my gentoo box.

But I couldn't get the new display working, I messed up a cable that was haltered at the back cover! When I took the cover off, the cable came with it and now, that's totally not usable.

The only big difference between the windows machine and the gentoo one is the wifi. Memory and battery where changed by default. Where do I find the wifi chip and can I replace it by plugging it off ? I'm kind of sad I broke my box, but have no idea how to fix that tiny cable at the back of the display, it is really micro. It is haltered on the left bottom side of the display. It's so sad such a wonderful laptop hat taped a cable at the cover :( I guess it was for detecting when the lid closes. But maybe it is just die display cable and that's why the replaced display doesn't work. Don't know.

The box I'm on right now (debian box above) doesn't have any bluetooth. So I will not open it  Besides, I'm scared of breaking stuff anyway now.

Thanks for any input.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

You should download a free copy of the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the X40 from here:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloa ... MIGR-53683

It is in the .PDF format so all you need is Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit Reader. Inside is enough information on where each major part is located and how to remove it from the system. The WiFi (MiniPCI) card is located behind the bottom panel, next to the memory socket. You cannot replace it with just any wireless card you want without having to do some more work. I believe with the X40, the BIOS has an internal "whitelist" of approved wireless cards. Installing one which the factory did not certify will result in an "1802" error when the laptop is turned on. However, there is a way around that problem and it involves installing an update to the BIOS. It's normally referred to as the "no-1802" fix. Information about it can be found here:
