Verdict on new keyboard?

#1 Post by court » Sun Jul 07, 2013 12:49 pm

Hi Guys (and girls),
I have a T420. Although, I had a relatively new Thinkpad before I bought the T420 that I use now. Which is the Sandy Bridge i7 with NVIDIA Optimus (1 GB) and I couldn't possibly love it anymore than I do!! However, the main reason I decided to go ahead and purchase it is that it is the last ThinkPad with the traditional keyboard. I have read many of myriad of Lenovo claims that the new keyboard is very similar to the original and that it is every bit as good. But, I wanted to ask first hand. If you have a model with the keyboard, please let me know what you think. Is it really just as good? -court (Clemson University Dept. of Comp. E)

I don't think people are upset about the quality of the new keyboard, it's very good, but the change of they layout, which has been used on ThinkPads for a long time. If you've got the old keyboard layout ingrained in your brain and use a lot of the short cuts, then you probably won't be very happy with new one. The new keyboard is firm and has excellent pitch like all ThinkPads. Myself, I'm more concerned about removing the trackpoint buttons than the new keyboard.

You'll have to test the new layout yourself, since the opinions on it are very divided and extreme.

If you're a touch typist who uses a lot of shortcuts, chances are you'll hate it.

If not, you may fall in love with it.

But you definitely must check it out yourself.
