Hi there, I owned a Thinkpad X41 for years and I was very happy with its performance. About 2 weeks ago, it failed. First error was 0x000000ED, which says something wrong with unmountable boot volume. Then, I removed the hard diskette, checked, put it back in, and somehow it shows 0x00008E, which is related to hardware compatibility issues.
A search on internet says something to do with my memory, etc. I was thinking, other than the additional 1G DIMM, the memory is hard soldered and cannot be removed one by one to test if it's causing problems. So, I went to eBay and purchased a second hand X41 mother board. Unfortunately, with the "new" second hand mother board, I still had the same error message 0x00008E when I tried to install a fresh WIN XP on the drive that originally came with X41.
Now even the other mother board does not allow me to install a fresh WIN XP and still showing hardware compatibility issues, I was wondering what went wrong??? It's only LCD screen and keyboard remain connected to the mother board - all others have been removed.
I guess my original mother board might not be faulty now. Would appreciate any idea how to fix my X41.

Leave out the memory module and boot again. If good, that is good news, if not, motherboard. I had similar issue with windows 7 on a computer and memory replacement was needed. The search on that exact description of that text with this code error came up and few of them commented on memory as well.
