Does anyone know if this is possible? I haven't had the chance to see the 2nd gen in person, so couldn't make a comparison.

X1 Carbon Gen 3, QHD non-Touch, i5, 8gig, 480gig M500
X1 Carbon Gen 1, i5, 8gig, 256gig Sandisk
T420si, i3, 16gig, 256gig M4

T43 SXGA+, 1.86Ghz, 2gig, 60gig Agility 2 + 160gig 5K80
T42 SXGA+, 1.7Ghz, 2gig, 80gig X18-M G1

Not possible. Different type of connector (LVDS vs. eDP) so it's a no-go.

i must add that while I dislike the new island and fn key strip keyboard of this X1 carbon gen 2 thinkpad I am getting accustomed to it..

I really like the touch high res display, the new carbon fiber case, the fast SSD (I upgraded to a 512GB SSD) and many other aspects of this first new thinkpad I have purchased since 2008..

this is not what I would think could easily be made into a frankenpad..

so, all in all I would give it all time to "wear" on you before jumping into mods like swapping the old style keyboard for this new one..

I really think Lenovo missed an opportunity to excel in customer relations by offering the old style keyboard as either an option or a $100 off downgrade..

this X1 carbon is slick..
even with this funky keyboard..
happily I am such a crappy typist it makes little difference and takes less "wearing in" for me..

I was able to check out a new 2nd gen X1C, and really didn't like the changes they made, especially the removal of the trackpoint buttons at the top of the touchpad. That was a deal breaker for me. Guess I'll be sticking to my 1st gen X1C for the time being. :|

You want to import the "COOL" ghosting effect to your first generation x1c, don't you?

Check Lenovo Forums and NBR...there are complaints of image retention - aka "ghosting" - on these panels...

It seems that X1C Gen3 would meet your needs ... I'll be making the choice between that and the upcoming X250.

Neither of these goes above 8GB of RAM, and on X1C it's actually soldered...A.D. 2015...really?

Nice work on the SSD aspect of new X1C, I'll give them that, though...

Still, the new X1C is very, very nice. Good keyboard feel, lightweight, runs cool, bright, clear screen. I've had a pre-production one since before Christmas, and I'm pretty happy with it.

I'll probably get the Gen3 X1C. 8gigs of RAM is a little tight, but no deal breaker. Glad they restored the Function keys and the buttons on the top of the touchpad.

X1 Carbon Gen 3, QHD non-Touch, i5, 8gig, 480gig M500
X1 Carbon Gen 1, i5, 8gig, 256gig Sandisk

T42 SXGA+, 1.7Ghz, 2gig, 80gig X18-M G1
