T43 Recovery/Repair - 2nd Failed Motherboard [ Need Advise ]

#1 Post by Amarbir » Sun Mar 01, 2015 7:33 am

Hello Everyone ,
I have always had a very pleasant small brief time stay at this forum out of my love for thinkpads .Please refer to one of my older posts - . http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=104531 .In this post i had replaced the fan of this laptop with something i got off ebay .That fan + heatsink gave up in a few months time frame and i had to install a new one " again sourced from ebay " . During this time frame the native motherboard had some issues and i changed into into a replacement that i had got from ebay .So now i have this replaced fan/heatsink assembly and my 1st swapped motherboard .The current issue is that my southbrigde seems to be defective and i cannot detect hdd .Its a western digital 250GB Hdd .And this is my 2nd motherboard .So today i have opened my t43 and i am Going to change this motherboard " My 3rd one " . I have a few questions

The Picture of My T43 Under Repair " Warning 640X480 Image On Tinypic "

PS : Moderator Sir i could not understand the picture rules much ,could you check and let me know if its ok .Also how can i center text i cannot find that option in the forum .

MOD edit: your picture is WAY too big (140KB, where only 50KB is allowed).
There is no text-centering option.

Question 1 : Could you please check the photo above .The north bridge chip seems to be left without any heatsink on it .Do we have a solution to this issue .

Question 2 : The southbridge is under the wifi card and hell it does get hot like a car radiator .Does anyone have a suggestion or a mod i can do .I am fedup changing fans/motherboards .

Question 3 : Is there a better fan for this piss poor heatsink i am using .I was suggested in a earlier thread to change this .So might be someone on the forums have a suggestion for me of a fan brand/Model .

In a T43/T43p both the Northbridge and Southbridge never had any cooling options.
To keep the Southbridge cooler, AFAIK the only way to do so, is remove the wifi card and get a PCMCIA wifi card instead.

Rather than keep buying T43 junk from eBay, get a T60 (with either ATI or Intel graphics) or a T61 (only with Intel graphics) from a trusted source, like our Marketforum.

Well,
For sure this seems to be the best solution to my problem .But the bloody engineer in me is not gonna sit ideal .I might just get this thing up and running but i will definitely do some mod .
You may try modding the heatsink, like these guys did:

Undervolting the CPU with an utility such as NoteBook Hardware Control or IBM ECW can help an awful lot when it comes to temps on these machines. It's not a "silver bullet" but it does make a difference, especially if one is running W7 which tends to stress these systems more than XP.

On a different note, M10 long fan (13R2657) from T42p works a lot better in the T43/p than the original M24 one - at least in my experience.

Good luck.

Respected George ,

I have not assembled the entire machine back but sir i have assembled to a point where i can test it .Everything is up and running .HDD is also detected and running .But holy cow sir [ The so called new fan/heatsink assembly is horrible the fan rattles and god knows what .I am planning to change the fan to a good quality one .Someone suggested me to change only the fan .This is what i intend to do .Also sir can you provide me photos of both the fan/heatsink assemblies you are talking out .I might need you help to source some quality parts " duly tested by you " and shipped to me to torrance from where i will cart it to india .I have also managed to get hold of both my older fans/heatsinks [ yes i have changed them 2 times earlier lol ] .
