Audio Problem T42 XP SP3: driver does not install

#1 Post by schmaud » Sun Apr 26, 2015 12:46 pm

Hallo,

I have a problem with the audio on a T42: In the devicemanager the soundmax is absent. Downloading the driver and attempting to intstall it give an error like: "driver not found" and a suggestion to reboot.
I found the suggestion to make sure that chipset drivers are present: reinstalling them and and attempting to install the audio results in the same problem.

Are there any reports of on board sound actually failng?
Are there any workarounds?

I am certain that sound was working on this machine, but this was years ago and with still with xp SP2.

Thanks for any advice

Ralf

Try booting up a live Linux disc, and see if you have sound then. That could help trouble shooting software (driver) vs. hardware problems.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

just an update:
I still have the old original Hdd with recovery partition.
PC-Doctor also can not find the Soundcard.

I tried the same PC-Doctor on my flexing t41 -> everything is OK.

I was not aware that this particular T42 had the pencil-mod to increase the FSB... may be the sound card does not like overclocking.
On the other hand a german forum mentions a missing audio-card as one potential first sign of flexing...

As i got this T42 as a replacment of my failing t41 is is time to consider a new machine...

off topic: any recommendations? Requirments: 9 mm Hdd, at least 1050 pixel vertically, VGA-out, dedicated track point keys, if possible build in DVD, long battery live computing power not really important

cheers

A T60 with SXGA+ display would suit your needs. They are pretty inexpensive now. I would recommend its younger T61 14.1" brother, but the hinges tend to get much more loose and may snap overtime.

You can try my driver, the T4x series generally all use the same drivers except depending on video card. If you read the readme for it the T40, T41, and T42 all use this driver.
