Why UXGA screens with LED-backlight are becoming unaffordable

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Mon Mar 14, 2016 9:22 am

There exists the BoeHydis HX150UX2-100 UXGA (4:3 1600x1200) IPS screen with ex-factory LED-backlight.
This screen has been a favorite for many FrankenPads and other T60 upgrades.

Many people have been wondering why these screens are getting so hard to buy.
Well, I found out why these superb screens are disappearing so fast and why prices are literally skyrocketing! (currently at $768.-)
They have become Flight Deck Displays in many aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The above is just one of many panels in the modern cockpit.

For more details see: http://www.avionicslcd.com/15_LCD_UXGA/ ... 0x1200.htm

As luck has it, I have just finished a 15" T601FL FrankenPad with such a LED-backlit screen! (probably the last ever)
It has one of those famous NOS T61 motherboards with NVS140M from TuuS.
Furthermore a T9300 CPU with W500 discrete fan, 8GB PC2-6400 RAM, wifi-N up to 450Mbps, and, and, and...

So start saving, it will go up for sale next!
(Actually perfect timing for using your IRS tax refund).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

WoW, interesting news... I guess I should have hung onto more of those screens when I had cases off them... but it was still nice to see so many of our members get them in their frankies.

So, now that those screens are unaffordable and the IAQ* 2K panels are nowhere to be seen, what are the available options, if any?

Any of the T60 flexview screens are amazing, the BOE Hydis screens are still available if you need UXGA and the SXGA+ are very affordable.

You wish they were!
Even the CCFL BoeHydis UXGA screens are not available for less than $200, IF you can even find a reliable supplier.

Thank you for the useful info! :D Never heard of it.

Could you clarify is there any significant difference between HV150UX2-100 - HX150UX2-100 and this one which according to that link is HVT-150UX2-LE ?
Or am I confusing something?

HV150UX1-100 - UXGA with CCFL
HV150UX2-100 - UXGA with LED
HX150UX2-100 - does not exist AFAIK, but HX... usually indicates XGA screen
HVT-150UX2-LE - probably their own number for a modded HV150UX2-100, which seems almost identical.
From the looks, they built an inverter/connector-panel on the back of the LCD.

(I have asked a friend in aviation to try and get a datasheet for me.)

We need to lobby the companies creating these flight control software to move to 16:9 ratio and free up the good 4:3 screens

To help decode the screen names, using HV150UX1-100 as an example:
HV : (BOE) Hydis Viewiz -- company name followed by their name for their ips technology cf. ibm's "flexview"
150 : screen size -- 15.0 inch diagonal
UX : screen resolution -- UXGA
1-100 : version/revision number but I can only guess as to how they increment it (major/minor revisions), for example the HV15UX1-101 has a ccfl backlight which I always find to be a drop-in HV150UX1-100 replacement but some others say differently.
On the other hand the HV150UX2-100 has LED backlighting.

So what to make of HVT-150UX2-LE?
Firstly they aren't sticking to the naming rules.
The "LE" at the end might be to make explicit it has LED backlighting.
The leading "HVT-" might just indicate a name-change for their ips "Technology" or an improvement on it.

Fortunately there are many ips screens, not even just those manufactured by BOE, that will work just as well (or better, depending on preference), see the sticky thread in this forum, so it is not necessary to pay an arm and a leg for the model featured here. Then again, if you have limbs to spare ...

Could you please enlighten us on where one would find those screens?
