recovery cds
recovery cds
hi,
I am getting a T42 (2378 FVU), but I am going to be replacing the hard drive, so it seems that the best thing to do is to use the recovery cds to install the operating system and drivers on the new drive. The question, I have is, is it possible to burn your own recovery cds or do I need to wait for IBM to send them?

It better to make your own windows xp install cd. All of the necessary files are on the I386 foler in your C: drive.
If you use the recovery CD then the insall time is going to be over 45 minutes. If you use your own winxp install CD it's much faster and you can customize your install to have the latest updates.
It's a bit complicated to outlline a full "unattended" installation. BUT, I'll start you guys off by using the Product Key is is in the unattended.txt file located in your I386 foler. That way you won't ever have to activate your copy of windows with Microsoft. Check what else is in that file for more options.
It only took me less than a day to figure out the details and gather the necessary files for my own install.
Basically,
I was able to install windowsxp, my applications, all of the thinkpad utils, and "not" install unwannted apps. i.e., who needs windows messenger, msn explorer, etc. Took em all out. This was all done with one single install CD less than 650MB.

With the T42s, you can burn your own recovery CDs.
See my webpage for more details about recovery CDs and making your own Windows XP installation CD: http://pmw.org/~gardnerj/Thinkpad/Insta ... BM_SERVICE
(Although RaysMD certainly got more advanced than I did).

Follow this link to make a bootable xp CD. It uses the same windows boot file as found in the original XP CDs.

call again! i ordered mine thursday afternoon and got them today(monday)...synapse wrote:I called them and they sent me out T40 / T40p ones. I just called them today to say I got the wrong ones and they said the T42p ones are not out yet and to try back next week. She was making a note of it in my case so I still get them for free. Has anyone received the right T42p ones yet from IBM?

heh... IBM would probably be happy that you're installing another OS seeing how much IBM endorses Linux. You no longer have to call IBM and beg them to send them to you (and admit to them that you are...GASP!...installing another operating system on their hardware).
