Really worth It?

#1 Post by PCO » Mon Jun 21, 2004 12:43 pm

Hey everyone,

I have an open question for the forum. Through a friend I am able to get a really good deal on the T41 and R51 model thinkpads. However, I am faced with a difficult decision. Both models have the exact same specs but the T41 is $400 (canadian) more expensive. Is the mobility and build of the T41 worth this added expense? Are there any other important differences I am missing out on? Any advice and input would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

They aren't the same (or there wouldn't be two models). I think the T is lighter than the R, and that counts a lot for me. Also, check the warranty. Two nearly identical machines can be a couple of hundred dollars apart because one has a three year warranty and one has a one year warranty. Get the three year warranty. Finally, the T's have always been a mainstay in the commercial laptop arena and I like that as well. I have a T41.

Also, don't the Ts have metal cases, while the Rs are plastic?

I was looking at their specs, and it seems that a 15 inch T42 is about 0.2 inches thinner than a 15 inch R51, weighs 0.8 pounds lighter, has a magnesium cover. the T series offers much higher specs than the R series, but is much more expensive too.

I've used the R series briefly, not built nearly as well as the T series and the case is all plastic...it feels very cheap in comparison. I think the extra money is worth it...
