Windows laptop prices have reached a new low. Amazon is taking preorders of this 3.9-lb HP laptop with 14.0" 1080p IPS, AMD E2-7110 Quad-Core CPU, 4GB RAM, 32GB eMMC and Windows 10 Home, for only $220 shipped:

Amazingly, this laptop has both VGA and HDMI outputs, three USB ports (one of them USB 3.0), an Ethernet port, a webcam, and it looks actually kind of business-class. With only 32GB internal storage, the user will depend mostly on SD, USB and/or cloud storage, but that's expected for such a rock-bottom price. This laptop can be categorized as a Cloudbook.

Note that $220 is the list price! When it's on sale, which will happen sooner or later, it should drop below $200.

Minus: everything else, AMD cpu, embedded ram, embedded emmc and probably no upg.

This would be fine if you could buy a better sku with a faster cpu and I'm hoping you can use msata or m2 to upgrade the storage.

Also what I find disturbing is that there's no entry on the HP laptop... its like as if HP make a crappy cheap SKU to get out there but there's no support.

Looks like a great deal. Would probably run Linux as well. USB 3.0 gives the opportunity for expandable storage if 32GB is not enough for you. Lots of newer drives sit almost flush with the laptop chassis; you would never know its there.

Just a quick Google search reveals this processor is on par with the first generation Core i5 in my X201 which is still fine for general browsing and writing code. Just try to find something from that era with an IPS 1080 screen. High res and IPS really didn't come back to laptops until Apple decided "retina" was a thing. Also, the HP seems to use less power, and probably has better battery life. If you need something processor intensive, use a real workstation, or put it in the cloud.

This could be a lot more than just a web browsing and video watching machine. It all depends on the abilities of the user. I'm sure plenty of movies and web pages are being watched on the P50.

PLayed with HP's Elitebook recently. Some 13 model at a friend's desk in a lab. We do sci computing, but I guess he hasn't been calculating anything at the moment. Well anyway, as you know Ellitebook is sort of class (or 2) above the model discussed here: still, it was HOT LIKE HELL I mean literally, you could almost fry an egg on it. As I had just gotten my hands of my x220, I was struck by the temperature difference. So I ask my pal is that normal, and he says 'meh, it's nothing now normally it's much worse'. Hence he oficially ended my interest in HP
So, until this here model is significantly undepowered (maybe i3...) I would wanna try it unless I can see it in person and see if it's a boiler too.

There are so many HPs from consumer to Probooks to Elites. I havent found them to be overly hot, except for the workstation models.

About this HP 14" - there's a service manual available and it looks reasonably workable. You could pop in a cheap 120gb ssd and it would be an ok machine. The quad core AMD seems to be an ok performer.

Yup, the 14" FHD IPS can't be more than $50 when bought in bulk.

that leaves $170 for: MB/CPU/RAM/SSD + case and keyboard + wifi AC + windows10 + packaging + marketing + drivers + support + a percentage of return + profit by HP and retailers.

profit can't be less than 10% for HP and 15% for retailer, so probably parts price is around $175

I kind of feel that a quad core 4gb chromebook is overkill... however for $220 I think this is a great deal for a Windows unit if you can work around the 32gb ssd.

I'd think so too, but since 64GB USB sticks cost less than $20 online, and 128GB being not that much more, a 1/2TB being maybe double that price. I don't think disk space is a real factor for people now, specially since cloud storage is being super cheap now.

It doesn't seem like a bad machine at all, very nice to be honest. Maybe this is the budget consumer laptop of the year.

With 32Gb as a booter and limited app drive you can drop in a cheap 64Gb sd card for your data.

Still, I mean people would be used to the speed of a modern ssd drive.

Side note and detour:
Im running a 64gig PCI-E in a SATA housing inside my traveling X130e as well as a dual SDHC card with 2 x 32gig cards or 64 gig total. The OS and Office as well as everything on a normal HDD is installed on the SSD for around 24 gigs. Movies are on one for the 32gigs and Music, Photos and everything else is on the other 32gig card. It boots like right now, music and movies play fine and other than training myself NOT to use the primary HDD/SSD for storage Im quite pleased.

This was tried as an experiment so cost wise I have no clue. Success wise, absolutely! Works like a charm, and the battery life is just short of forever.

According to the service manual you need the 2.5 hdd bracket and the sata to ribbon cable connector.

There are two part numbers for it, just see how hard it is to get them.

It would be nice if there's a bracket to put a hdd on the cdrom sata port.

This machine would have been immensely popular if it was for sale when I was in college. I have a feeling that market will be the most popular for these machines. Almost everybody streams everything these days so none of that HD content would be stored to the drive.

the price is nice though so if the eMMC was upgradable at all i probably would have went for it. 32gb is a bit cramped even if I don't really plan to keep anything on the machine itself.

edit: just saw the post about the SATA cable... interesting. i will definitely keep an eye on this machine...

I would buy this just for the $hitz and giggles but I think they HDD will be an issue.

I have a stockpile of 120Gb SSDs that are discards from my clients who have upgraded to larger ssds. This would be perfect for this machine however unless you can buy that ribbon cable that allows connection to the board then its a bust.

It clearly is a part for a 2nd model that uses a slow 500Gb HDD but I doubt you can find that part anywhere at any cost.

I guess people are put off by the 32Gb emmc?

I forgot about this thread! I have a friend who asked for a new laptop suggestion a few weeks ago, just for internet use and streaming videos also online as well as IRC. Seeing as it's just about impossible to get a 1080p display in anything even under $450, i recommended this to him and let him be the guinea pig on it, it is a great laptop to him sofar. I am considering one for myself even, that is if the SATA cables are easy enough to get.
